Entertainment Theatre review Leisure Jokes hit close to home in Johns' new play By Sarah Mann Special to The Citizen Ted Johns is known for creating plays in Blyth that centre around the everyday doings of locals and Cricket and Claudette is no exception as audience members are taken to the dump - drama 'and all. Claudette, played by. Shauna Black, is a newly-minted engineer and part of the "garbage gestapo". She is in charge of overseeing a Huron County landfill and making sure that the changes needed because of amalgamation are being made. She arrives to find Cricket, played by Adrian Churchill, filling in for Speed, played by Festival favourite Jerry Franken, who is, in turn, filling in for Bridey (Janet Amos). As with everything in a small town, the dump is not without its controversy as Speed, who also happens to be dating Bridey, is suspected of using the Misty River dating service and Cricket, who is Bridey's nephew, starts to ogle Claudette (or as Speed likes to call her, Rambo). The most likeable character in this play is Cricket, who, although uneducated, comes up with shockingly thoughtful and insighful perspectives. He is easily amused and takes pleasure in the more simple things in life , like making art out of garbage. This play has many funny moments such as when Speed explains how, after returning from a Communities in Blooms meeting, "it's about the flowers but it's also about your dump". "Underneath the gardening club is an iron fist," he says. There were times when I found Brussels punk rock band Perish is returning for their first hometown show in five years. Over the last few years, three of the group members, Joshua Gropp and Rob McKercher (both from Brussels) and Tom Ireland from Teeswater have been busy attending school and improving their musical craft. McKercher and Ireland attended the Studio Engineering program at the Ontario Institute of Audio Recording Technology, and Gropp is entering his second year in the Jazz Guitar program at Humber College. The band recently added a lead vocalist, Blyth's Shaun Henry and have been fostering their live act with regular performances over the summer in venues from Kitchener to Lucknow and Goderich. The group will be performing on Saturday, Aug. 28 at the Brussels Legion. The show will be from 1 - 6 WEDDINGS Performed - your location or our indoor or outdoor chapel (non-denominational) For brochure call: REV. I was laughing out loud during many parts of this play and as director Heinar Piller said in a statement, "if it wasn't true, it wouldn't be funny." p.m. with an, admission cost of $5 per person.. Perish will be joined by three other And the man sitting beside me agreed as he remarked, "I live right across from the dump, I know how the dump works". It's this honesty and ability to turn the everyday into art that makes Ted Johns a Blyth Festival favou- rite. Cricket and Claudette runs at the theatre until Sept. 4. bands, Distrot (from Teeswater), Dramaturg (from Kitchener) and Eye In Me (from Wallaceburg). Local band set to play irst home show in 5 years
