`Test Drive' opens Thursday at Blyth
Test Drive, a new play by Dave
Carley opens at the Blyth Festival on
Aug. 12.
The play features Blyth's artistic
director Eric Coates as Earl Hughes —
a veteran car salesman who is
convinced that his product — American
Motors (AMC) Nash automobile —
rivals all other brands. He knows cars;
Marie Beath Badian, director of
the 2004 Blyth Festival Young
Company program received one of
the inaugural Jessica Fraser Awards
for Artists and Educators at a special
presentation on June 17 in Toronto.
The director is working with the
Blyth Festival and 13 youths on a
new play about growing up in Huron
County. The play, called Tall Tales,
Big Fat Lies and Unbelievable
Truths - The Collected
Autobiography of H.C. Kidd which
is being performed this week Aug. 9
- 13 at 5 p.m.
Badian received this award in
honour of her commitment to theatre
for young people. Last summer she
was a guest director for the Blyth
Festival Young Company and the
2003 Young Company co-ordinator
Theatre review
Mandy Mitchell, the winner of the
Brussels Fall Fair, will be competing
in the Ambassadors of the Fair
starting Aug. 20 at the 2004 CNE.
The finals will be at the Queen
Elizabeth Theatre Aug. 22.
Approximately 80 young men and
women (ages 18-25) from across
rural Ontario, each winners at their
it's life that baffles him.
Carley has a fascination with cars
and the people who buy and sell them.
"The changes in the industry over the
years have paralleled the changes in
North American society. I originally
wrote it as a series for CBC Radio and
I expanded it into a two act stage
play."
and local artist, Capucine Onn
described Badian as imaginative,
dedicated and exciting to work
with. ,
This summer she is working with
the Young Company for five weeks
training in improvisation, collective
creation and play creation. -
Tickets to the Young Company
show - the collected stories from the
vibrant and eager voices of Huron
County students are available at the
P b th Festival Box Office 523-9300
or Toll flee 1-877-862-5984.
Artistic director Lynda Hill
described Badian, (actor, writer and
director) as "the very model of a
devoted theatre for young people
practitioner. She is a dynamic artist
and compassionate teacher. She is
equally 'passionate about the
finding bugs, bothering older
siblings and just running around free
from any worries. .
Then as life moves on and kids
begin growing up, the reality of
living in a small town is brought
forward as the actors explain all the
positive and negative aspects of
living in Huron County.
The group gives a fantastic
performance of life as a teenager
showing all the pressures that
teenagers have to deal with
including graduating, getting into a
good college, parental pressure,
friends and bullies.
As H.C. Kidd hops onto an
imaginary ship to sail away in hopes
of finding the treasure, the captain
explains what would be the
importance of life if he told Kidd
what the treasure would be at the end
of the trip.

Miles Potter directs the world
premiere playing Aug. 11 - Sept. 4.
Also featured are Darren Keay (Salt-
Water Moon, 2004) and Jane Spidell
(Yesteryear/Thirteen Hands, 1998).
Carley is no stranger to the Blyth
Festival. Big Box, his satire on the big
box retailers was produced at the
Blyth Festival in 1999 and was
potential for engagement and
enlightenment of the young person
in their immersion in the theatrical
world and in the dialogue that
precedes or follows in any educatiOn
component. She has, as the associate
artistic director and then in her.
continuing role as an associate artist
with the company explored almost
every aspect of TYA and has
embraced each experience with
energy, intelligence and artistry."
The awards were established by
Theatre Direct, shortly after the
passing of the respected arts
administrator, actor, producer • and
teacher from generous contributions
from friends and family, to honour
Ms. Fraser and a commitment to
nurturing relationships between
artists and educators.
Young adulthood comes next. The
actors do an excellent job of
describing pressures of those
stressful years that include getting
married, having kids, getting a well
paying job, buying a house, paying a
mortgage and a small hope of an
early retirement.
Every step of life that shines
through each actor in this play does
have some sorrow as personal
memories may spring out of
nowhere. But there 'are also many
humorous moments as well.'"
Crazy and spontaneous phrases
that just come out of nowhere will
bring a smile to your face while
remembering what makes being a
kid so fun. Plus the fact it's okay -to
get a little dirty, discover some sort
of mischief,-the feeling of being free
while growing up in Huron County.
Shows run from Aug. 9 - 13
beginning at 5 p.m. each night.
