THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, AUGUST 12, 2004. Melville Presbyterian marks 150th with big celebration this weekend The congregation of Melville Presbyterian Church, Brussels will celebrate its 150th anniversary on the weekend of Aug. 14 and 15 with a variety of activities. Melville was started in the early 1850s but it was not until 1857 that the congregation felt able to construct their first church. An acre of land was purchased from Thomas Halliday, at the corner of Turnberry and Queen Streets, on which a wood-frame building was constructed. At the same time another Presbyterian congregation, Knox Presbyterian, built a church at the corner of John and Ellen Streets. The two congregations continued to exist side-by-side until 1895 when they merged to form the present Melville Friday, Aug. 6 the Wingham and District Community Living Association drew the name of the first early bird winner for its annual Lottery Dinner and Dance. Doug and Lis Hargrave of Fordwich won the first $500 early bird prize. There will be one more early bird prize of $500 to be won on Sept. 3. The Wingham and District Community Living Association has been providing support to adults with an intellectual disability in the northern part of Huron County and the southern part of Bruce County for 47 years. It is a non-profit organizatibn and, although funding is received from the Ministry of Community and Social Services the association is responsible for raising money through its own efforts. For the past 26 years the dinner and dance has been the largest fundraising event. The Lottery Dinner and Dance will take place this year on Saturday, church. In 1872, Melville moved to its present location at the corner of Princess and Dunedin Streets and a structure composed of bricks purchased from Thomas Ainley, the son of William Ainley the founder of Brussels, was constructed. By 1914 the congregation had grown to the extent that it was determined a new building was necessary. With this decision the present Melville church rose on the site of its predecessor. On Aug. 14 the church will host two musical events, starting with an afternoon jam session open to all interested in either playing or listening. At 8 pm. the same day Col. Tom and his Country String Band will perform pure country and Sept. 25 at the Teeswater Culross Arena. ,In the past this event has been held at various halls in the area but due to overwhelming response the event has had to move to a larger venue. During the afternoon jam session children's activities will be provided. From 5 - 7 p.m.. a barbecue and corn roast will be held at the church - outside if the weather co-operates. Sunday, Aug. 15, will feature a re- enactment service with Gerald; Gibson providing a brief history of the church and the choir leading the congregation in old familiar hymns, popular during the early 1900s. To celebrate the chureh's connection with the town of Brussels an historical walking tour will he held after the potluck lunch following the service. The church will be open, for viewing from Friday until Sunday as well as a display from the church MS lives here. Multiple sclerosis never hits just one person.
