Club folds
The final meeting of the Brussels
Lawn Bowling Club was held at the
clubhouse at 1:30 p.m., Thursday,
July 29 with 14 members and former'
members in attendance.
Three charter members were in
attendance. They were: Gerald
Gibson, Jim Bowman and Viola
Kirkby. Present members were: Jim
Coultes, Nora Stephenson, Laura
Johnston, Louise Bosman, Gordon
Bosman, Isabelle Wheeler, Mabel
Wheeler, Shirley and George
Wheeler, Gerald Gibson, Ken
Barbour and Jean Bewley.
President Yvonne Knight was
unable to attend so Jean Bewley,
secretary-treasurer, conducted the
meeting held to consider the
proposal made by the Brussels
Optimists for future use of the
bowling club's property. It was
accepted by motion.
The Brussels Optimist Club.
commits to: assume the land lease
from the municipality of Huron East
(three lots), assume ownership of the
railway station at the present
location (easement), assume
ownership of all the lawn equipment,
tables, chairs, fridge, stove, etc. and
continue to display the lawn bowling
club trophies, history, etc. in the
display case on the north wall of the
station.
Proper insurance would be
purchased locally and the Optimists'
intent is to maintain this property
and make it available to all lochl
residents for their enjoyment.
The bank balance will be divided
equally between the Belgrave
Optimist Club and Brussels Optimist
Club. A short discussion followed.
Historically, there have been as
many bowling club members from
Belgrave as Brussels so it was
agreed that it was only fair to donate
to the Belgrave club also.
At the Branch
By Jo-Ann McDonald
The euchre tables at Brussels
Legion were filled this past week.
Fourteen tables were in play.
The top prizes were shared by the
teams of Tojn and Eileen Sloan and
Elsie Mogk and Doreen Skinner
with 74 points each. The third-place
team was Glen Sellers and Ed
Stewart with a close 73 points.
The good cards were hiding from
Helen Casemore and Jean Deans
who earned only 37 points.
We're back. July is now history
and we have a whole load of new
memories to pack into our minds.
Our time was spent being good
tourists in Vancouver, cruising the
Inner Passage to Alaska and
checking out the scenery, touring
Vancouver Island and then meeting
up with brother Clif and Anne and
spending a week houseboating the
Shuswap Lakes.
O my! All the glowing adjectives
seem to work when I think of this
holiday. Yes it was wonderful.
The sights and sounds of the
motorcycles will be about this week
as the Nationals are run in Walton.
Excitement and work for many of
our local groups who make this
The lone hand winners were
Charlie Cameron with three and
Edna McLellan with five.
Euchre is every two weeks at the
Branch.
The Sunday night singles dance
had new entertainment. Over 90
enjoyed the music of John and
Geneva Heaman and their band.
The Country Versatiles are playing
this weekend.
The Branch was saddened with the
news of the passing of veteran Bill
event go.
Have a good time.
The Culture Club is a little
depressed — they're waiting
impatiently for Louie and Jim to get
a little better so they can rejoin the
ranks and contribute to the subject
matter discussed.
Camping, fishing, soccer, biking,
ball and overnights with
grandparents seem to be keeping lots
of the kids about busy for the
summer. Have fun.
Don't forget to get your tickets to
the Blyth Festival once again.
Goodbye Bill Bremner. Fran and
family had the privilege of sharing
life with Bill. As they celebrated his
life and death they were assured by
the many friends and neighbours
who came to tell them stories about
the good, kind gentleman they call
husband and dad. Celebrate those
cherished memories.
Check the paper and bulletin
boards there are lots of nice things
happening in the area — bands,
music, concerts, plays, dinners what
fun.
Bye now, Betty G.W.
Bremner. Over 35 comrades
gathered at the Schimanski Family
Funeral Home for a Legion service.
This included comrades from
Branch 409 Palmerston.
Rev. Cathrine Campbell led the
service filling in for padre Joan
Golden.
Comrade Bill will be missed as a
quiet supporter of the Branch in
many ways. He was a willing
participant and helper when the
school children attended information
days with the veterans.
A member of the Armed Forces
with the Airforce, he told stories of
his training days and learning to use
the signal flags.
We offer our deepest sympathies
and condolences to his wife Fran and
his family.
The Friday night supper of
Chinese casserole was enjoyed by
over 30. This week is lasagna.
The fish fry at the Branch on
Saturday saw over 120 enjoy dinner.
The work crew included Glenn
Bridge, Murray Lowe, George
Adams, Mike Dauphin, Doug Koch
and Andy Overholt.
September will soon be upon us
with lots of things to look ahead to.
Any interested teens from 12-19
wanting to join Cadets should set
Tuesdays evenings aside.
The Brussels Pipe Band practises
Thursday evenings and always
welcomes new members. Lessons in
the bagpipes and drumming are
available. Contact Drum Major
Donald Martin.
-The Branch will be smoke-free
come 'September as the Huron
County smoking bylaw comes into
effect.
Elimination draw tickets are
available from members and at.
Murray's Barbershop. There will be
a fish fry as well that day and help is
always needed.
