Chamney Sanitation in business 35 By Elyse DeBruyn Citizen staff Thirty-five years after the first bag of garbage was collected, waste disposal, recycling and scrap metal continues to be the focus of one most prominent business in Auburn servicing communities throughout Huron County. Located at 127 Goderich Street in Auburn and offering a wide array of customer services with over 1,000 dumpsters of all sizes, Chamney Sanitation Ltd., has become Huron County's only full-service waste disposal company. The life of Chamney Sanitation began 54 years ago, when Gordon "Bud" Chamney started a trucking business in 1950. This developed into Chamney Sand and Gravel and in 1970, Bud with his wife Laura May, diversified their business when they were awarded the contract to pick up the residential garbage for the village of Auburn. • This was a humble beginning to the waste disposal business as they started with just a simple pick up truck and their sons who manually loaded and unloaded-the truck. Eventually, a single axle stake truck was utilized to collect garbage in various Huron County locations including Auburn, Londesborough, Vanastra, Hensall, Clinton and Bayfield. By the late 70s, the company had purchased two Haul-All packer trucks for this service and continues today to provide the residential collecting service. In 1978. the business expanded with the, purchase of a local container lugger business that consisted of a lugger truck and 18 bins. This new acquisition catered to the construction, renovation and roofing trades, where a dumpster was temporarily needed for waste removal. It was at this time that scrap metal recycling became an important part of business operations. Around the same time sons Eldon and Doug became involved full-time in the family business. Twenty-five years later, Chamney Sanitation now has three lugger trucks and 250 lugger dumpsters to service this part of the business. Chamney's bought the former Huron County Highways property in 1979, which remains as the head office of Chamney Sanitation today. This property and garage has allowed the business to do most of their truck repairs and maintenance as well as serve as the location for their municipally licenced salvage yard. _ Another expansion took place in 1992 when Chamney traded an industrial loader fro a White Expeditor front end truck and 30 bins. These two, four and six cubic yard containers with lids, serviced the residential, commercial and manufacturing and retail markets. From meagre beginnings, this has developed into a major faucet of the company's business and 12 years years later the company has two Mack front-end trucks and 750 bins in circulation, including many for cardboard recycling. Doug and Eldon bought the business from their parents in 2000 and continue today to provide the same prompt, efficient service and customer satisfaction that their father started so many years ago. Further expansion and diversification occurred in the fall of 2001 when the company purchased a roll-off truck and bins. / These 20, 30, and 40 cubic yard containers are utilized for large construction and demolition projects as well as for the scrap metal industry. Three years later this fast expanding division consists of two trucks and over 25 roll-off dumpsters.
