`Salt-Water Moon' makes season 3 for 3
Sweet talker
Darren Keay as Jacob does his best to win back the heart of Mary (Charlotte Gowdy) in this
scene from David French's Salt-Water Moon playing at Blyth Festival until Aug. 20. (Terry Manzo

Jacob share the stage and win our
hearts. Their story is one of warmth
and emotion, laughter and tears,
anger and a deep, abiding love.
Through its telling the audience
enjoys some poignant moments and
some good deep belly laughs.
Jacob, who left his Newfoundland
home for Toronto without a word to
Mary a year before has returned a
month before her wedding. Her
intended is the son of the man who
demeaned Jacob's father, and for
whom he holds an intense grudge.
Mary's father was killed in the war
and her mother's breakdown as a
result landed Mary in servitude and
her younger sister in an orphanage.
Learning that she has been
mistreated is the reason, Mary
finally admits to Jacob, that she has
chosen to marry someone who can
help.

Good writing, confident direction
and solid acting pull together in Salt-
Water Moon, to give Blyth Festival's
30th season a three-for-three
winning start.
Following on the success of The
Outdoor Donnellys and Heat Wave,
Blyth's third offering this year re-
visits a couple with whom we
became acquainted in the 2003
season.
Last year the Festival production
of David French's Leaving Home
introduced us to Jacob and Mary
Mercer and their family in 1959. It
revealed turbulence and conflicts,
relationship's where passions and old
hurts ran deep.
With Salt-Water Moon French
takes us back to 1926, a moon-filled
night, when Jacob and Mary re-unite
and re-kindle their love. It is a dance
of emotions as they alternately spar
and spark.
For one-and-a-half hours Charlotte
Gowdy as Mary and Darren Keay as
Blyth, understands the characters'
ambitions and weaknesses. He has
his actors making full use of the
stage to good effect.
The set design by Shawn Kerwin
is effectively simple.
Salt-Water Moon, which plays
until Aug. 21, is intelligent,
emotional and entertaining, a truly
winning combination.
There's a better way to
move that old furniture...

While Mary strives to ignore
Jacob, their strong feelings for each
other ultimately draw them together.
Gowdy is a vivacious Mary, a
woman of spirit with just enough
bite to be interesting. Her wry
humour softens a somewhat caustic
sting.
Through his performance Keay
shows us the dreamer in Jacob, the
young man with grand plans and a
capacity for great love. His bravado
masks a vulnerability; his charm is
that of a naughty boy who believes a
smile and a compliment can fix
anything.
French's script is heavy on words,
light on action and both actors meet
the challenge, delivering his
eloquent prose with brisk
confidence.
