From the Minister's Study
Summer good time to celebrate life
_ By Rev. Dave Wood,
Huron Chapel Evangelical
Missionary Church, Auburn
Three friends from the local
congregation were asked "When
you're in your casket, and friends
and congregation members are
mourning over you, what would you
like them to say?"
Ernest said: "I would like them to
say I was a wonderful husband, a
fine spiritual leader, and a great
family man."
John commented: "I would like
them to say I was a wonderful
teacher and servant of God who
made a huge difference in people's
lives." Les said: "I'd like them to say.
"Look, he's moving!"
And with summer in full swing,
there is a lot more movement taking
place! Doesn't it seem like there are
a lot more cars on the roads these
day'?'?? Everywhere I go, even in
Blyth, cars abound and many of
them are packed to the hilt, loaded
with holiday paraphernalia on their
way to some exotic vacation
destination.
No doubt, summer is here (but
with the weather we have been
having. I wonder if it is in disguise?)
and people are on the move. Isn't it
great? The smells of barbecues
drifting in the air (luring Fran out of
her house to see what neighbour she
can join for dinner). Trees in full
bloom, gardens growing, night skies
alive with twinkling stars!
Such is the miracle of creation,
such is the elaborate and complex
design of our Creator.
Psalm 139:13-16 speaks to the
wonder of our creation. It speaks of
us! God knows us inside and out,
each bone is known and He sculpted
us from nothing into something! We
are tearfully and wonderfully made!
Such is the value that God has placed
upon us.
Unfortunately, there have been
people who have been told that they
are worthless and their existence is
nothing more than an "accident".
From a Biblical standpoint, this is so
far from the truth for with God there
are no "accidents". and He never
makes mistakes!
It may seem like it. It may feel like
it but the Father has a reason for
everything He has created. (Even
Fran!)
Dr. Michael Denton of New
Zealand is a senior research fellow in
human molecular genetics at the
University of Otago. He notes: "All
the evidence available in the
biological sciences supports the core
proposition . . . that the cosmos is a
specially designed whole with life
and mankind as its fundamental goal
and purpose, a whole in which all
facets of reality have their meaning
and explanation in this central fact."
Nature's Destiny: How the Laws
of Biology Reveal Purpose in the
Universe (New York: Free Press,
1998), p. 389.) We are the reason!
All of it, the earth and everything in
it, was made by God for us and
simply because He loves us. Think
about it! If there is no God then this
would mean that we are nothing
more than random accidents and as
such we have no real meaning, no
purpose. no significance.
But as Warren writes, "But there is
a God who made you for a reason,
and your life has profound meaning!
We discover that meaning and
purpose only when we make God the
reference point of our lives." (The
Purpose Driven Life, p. 25)
As we enjoy the beauty of
summer, as we watch it all around
us, ponder for a moment the "why"
of it all. It is the gift of the Father
who with the Son, has created all
things for us to enjoy because He
loves us.
