It was bawdy fun at Blyth Festival
on Thursday night with the opening
of Michel Marc Bouchard's Heat
Wave.
Starring Janet Amos, Shauna
Black, Adrian Churchill, Jerry
Franken and Aaron Franks, the story
centres on newly-widowed, Giselle
and her affair with a much younger
man, Yannick. While she welcomes
the rekindling of passion and
romance in her life. the middle-aged
woman is reluctant to share her news
with anyone. The untimely arrival at
her lakeside cottage of her twins,
Louisette and Louis, during her
romantic weekend, sets her on a
Course of deception and
misinterpretations that are rollicking
good fun for the audience.
Mounting this play on the Blyth
stage may have been a bold move by
artistic director Eric Coates. The idea
of May-December romances, illicit
love affairs and homosexuality, not
too mention the flash of bare skin,
may raise some hackles among the
conservatives. However, putting any
sensibilities aside it is refreshing to
see a story that depicts a woman of
certain years as a passionate human
being, not a dried up crone.
As well the underlying message of
living for one's self rather than to
meet others' expectations is sound.

It's a bawdy 'Heat Wave' at Blyth Festival
Oh mother!
things niggle, such as why a widow
who works with delinquents would
hood up with one. But the humour is
abundant and written with a wry
hand.
•The set design by Joanne Dente
puts you right in the heart of cottage
country.
Director Randy Hughson played
up the fun with all his heart, even
going for the laughs during the scene
change, which despite being a little
silly, certainly pulled out more than a
chuckle or two from the audience. So
light-hearted was his approach it felt
that his biggest instruction to the cast
may have been, "Just go up there and
have a blast."
If so, it appears they listened well.
While Amos as Giselle and Franken
as her neighbour Napoleon are
typically solid, the young folks more
than hold their own against the
popular veterans.
Churchill charms as the
homosexual Louis, while Black is a
perfect blend of tomboy and
coquette as Louisette. And Franks
plays the youthful Yannick with just
the right touch of naivete.
Without a doubt, Heat Wave is
provocative and sexual. It may even
offend a small percentage. They can,
however, consider themselves duly
warned and choose not to see it.
The rest will have the pleasure of
seeing good actors enjoying what
they are doing ,and making it
enjoyable for you. You will laugh
and often.

Louis (Adrian Churchill) becomes frustrated by his mother's (Janet Amos) reactions as he tries
to share with her his big secret. The two star in Michel Marc Bouchard's Heat Wave which
opened at Blyth Festival on July 8 and runs until Aug. 20. (Terry Manzo photo)
And while there may be a
moment's shock realizing how
swiftly the widow found herself a
new companion this is dispelled as
the story unfolds and as is often the
case, the audience learns that
everything is not black and white.
Bouchard's script is entertaining,
though not perfect. Some minor ....1,--
