JOHANNES JOSEPH
KERKHOF
Joseph Kerkhof of Brussels passed
away as a result of a freak accident
on Tuesday, June 22, 2004. Born on
June 3, 1990, Joseph was 14 years
old.
Joseph was a boy who loved
people and adventure. He was
someone who always had a smile on
his face and harboured no hard
feelings for anyone, a boy with a big
heart and great capacity for love. He
enjoyed finding ways to make others
laugh, particularly younger children.
Joseph loved music, having begun
a year ago to learn bass guitar which
he played in his school's jazz band.
He also played clarinet, and was the
only boy in the school's concert
band.
The night before Joseph's sudden
passing, he had just graduated from
Brussels Public School where he
received the Margery Huether award
for music. He was also a recipient of
an award for academic excellence.
Actively involved with the 2967
Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps.
in Brussels, Joseph had a perfect
attendance record. He had recently
attained the ranking of corporal and
would have been leaving in a few
days for six weeks at Camp Borden.
But Joseph's greatest enjoyment
came from his deep religious faith.
He always sat in the front pew of
Wingham Pentecostal Church where
his family attended services and was
very' involved with the church's
youth group, Generation JY.
Joseph was the beloved son of
John and Pauleen. He was dearly
loved by his Gramsie, Meta Pons,
and his Oma, Reina Kerkhof. He
was the dear brother of Annamieka
and Emily and friend of his youth
pastor Holly Stein. Joseph was loved
as well by his many family members
and friends.
Friends were received by the
family on Friday at the Schimanski
Family Funeral Home, Brussels. The
funeral service was conducted on
Saturday, June 26 at 1 p.m. from the
Wingham Pentecostal Church with
Pastor Tim Bjorkman officiating.
Joseph's Cadet Corps presented
their colours at the start of the
service which was followed by The
Father's Love Letter, ready by Holly
Stein.
Liz Rackow and the worship band
peformed My Best Friend, King of
Majesty and Blessed Be Your Name,
and later performed Here I Am To
Worship and Amazing Love.
Joseph's Grade 8 classmates laid
yellow roses on the casket while the
song, The Time of Your Life, which
they had sung together at graduation,
then assembled to tape the evening
prior, played in the background.
The hymn, Great Is Thy
Faithfulness, was sung led by Holly
Stein. Solos in tribute to Joseph were
performed by Pastor Bjorkman and
David Keating. A eulogy was given
by his uncle,-Joe Kerkhof.
The microphone was then opened
to all and his mother Pauleen,
teacher Erin Baan, principal Heather
Beattie, and many others to whom
Joseph was special in their lives paid
tribute to him.
-Pallbearers were Paul Kerkhof,
Joe Kerkhof, Ed Stein, Larry
Nethery, David Keating and Zachary
Horne.
The interment followed at
Brussels Cemetery with the
procession led by Const. Armstrong,
community services officer and
school liaison of the Ontario
Provincial Police.
As an expression of sympathy,
memorial donations may be made to
Generation JY of the Wingham
Pentecostal Church.
WILLIAM ALEXANDER
ELLIOTT
On June 27, 2004, Alex Elliott was
taken by the Lord to rejoin his
beloved wife Marian who
predeceased him in 1994.
He was the loving and proud
father of Rick and his wife Joan of
Waterloo, and father-in-law of
Shirley of Kitchener; loving and
proud "Papa" of Lisa (her husband
Bryan Henry and their son William)
of Waterloo, Paul Elliott-Magwood
(and his wife Carolyn) of Ottawa,
Ruth (and her friend Kevan Scott) of
Kitchener and Mark Stevenson of
Kitchener. Alex is also survived by
his brother Frank (and his wife
Dorothy) and by his sister-in-law
Betty (Mrs. Gordon Elliott), all of
Blyth, as well as numerous nieces
and nephews, all of whom remember
him with fondness.
He was predeceased by his
parents, Jack and Ada, sister
Gertrude (Mrs. Lloyd Wettlaufer),
and brothers Bertram and Gordon.
Born in Thessalon, Ontario on Jan.
29, _ 1908, Alex spent his younger
years with his family' in Blyth. In
May 1937, at -the age of 29, he
moved to Beardmore, Ontario to
oversee several potential gold-
bearing properties co-owned by his
father. During his stay there, Alex
was made a justice of the peace and
notary public, and, along with a
single OPP officer. constituted the
sole authority in this mining town.
While on business in nearby Port
Arthur (now Thunder Bay), he met
and instantly fell in love with Marian
Steadwell of Fort William. They
were married on Aug. 31, 1940, and
Alex continually delighted in
relating, to all who would listen, the
story of his serendipitous meeting
with "his Marian". Two days after
the wedding, he was appointed by
the federal government to conscript
recruits from Port Arthur district for
war duty.
After three years in this onerous
position, he called himself for active
duty, at the age of 35, joined the
Royal Canadian Navy as a
Lieutenant aboard the frigate
H.M.C.S. Carl Place (he was the
oldest person on the ship).
Following service in the North
Atlantic on convoy duty he was later
stationed at the naval base in
Halifax; he always treasured his two
years in the navy, and would often
recount his experiences. _
Upon his demobilization in 1945,
Alex was hired by the Department of
Veterans Affairs, and requested
assignment to the Port Arthur district
so that he might be able to help those
he had previously drafted with their
re-entry into civilian life. In October,
1947, he was appointed Master of
Land Titles and Registrar of Deeds
for Port Arthur district, a post he
held with distinction until his
retirement in 1971.
He and Marian then moved to
Waterloo to be near their son and his
family, and, in 1990, he joined
Marian at Golden Years Residence
and Nursing Home in Cambridge
where he remained until his death.
While at Golden Years, Alex
enjoyed his many relationships with
the staff and other residents, and was
widely known -for his outgoing
personality and generosity of spirit.
His family greatly appreciates the
love and care he received from this
outstanding facility.
Alex was a true gentleman in
every sense of the word, and he will
be missed by many.
A memorial service in celebration
of Alex's life was held in the chapel
of the Edward R. Good Funeral
Home, 171 King Street South,
Waterloo, at 1:00 p.m. on
Wednesday, June 30, with Rev. Rick
Burgess officiating.
Cremation has already taken
place, and interment at Parkview
Cemetery in Waterloo followed the
funeral service.
The family requests that, in lieu of
flowers, donations be made to
Golden Years Nursing Home and
can be arranged through the funeral
home (745-8445 or
www.edwardgood.com).
