Mrs. Margaret Ferne McDowell of

District Hospital on Monday, June
14, 2004. She was in her 83rd year.
Mrs. McDowell was born in East
Wawanosh Twp. on April 5, 1922
and was the daughter of the late Alva
and Della (Braithwaite) McDowell.
Mrs. McDowell was a member of
the Blyth United Church.
She was the beloved wife of
Harvey McDowell. Mrs. McDowell
was the loving mother of John and
Norma McDowell of London, Don
and Elizabeth McDowell of

Robinson of RR I, Belgrave, and
Carol and John Spadoni of Sault Ste.
Marie. She was the cherished
grandmother of Craig and Jill
McDowell, Ryan. Steven and
Andrew Gibb, Brad, Brent and
Sherri Robinson. She was the .clear
sister and sister-in-law of Murray
and June McDowell of Burgessville
Psalm 42 was read responsively by
Rev. Campbell and the congregation.
This was followed by the children's
hymn, Sing Them Over Again for
Me, and the children of the church
gathered at the front for their story
with Rev. Campbell.
"Do you know the meaning of
your name?" asked Rev. Campbell
as she thumbed through the book she
carried. Then for almost every child
she was able to read out a definition
or derivation of their name, with
and Lloyd McDowell of Stratford.
Mrs. McDowell will also be fondly
remembered by her nieces and
nephews.
She was predeceased by her
parents Alva and Della McDowell,
sisters-in-law Elaine and June

further research promised to the rest.
Rev. Campbell told the children that
the name of each one of them was
special because, "These are your
names and you are the ones who are
going to bring these names honour".
Then referring to the story of Jesus
casting out demons and calling them
by name, she continued "When
you're afraid of something, it helps
to name your fears and then you get
help._ And if you name them to God,
this is prayer".
The children then went downstairs
to their classrooms.
The scripture lesson of 1 Kings
19:1 - 15; Galatians 3: 23 - 29; Luke
8: 26 - 39 was read by Rev.
Campbell with assistance from
reader Murray Cardiff.
This was followed by the hymn,
How Sweet the Name of Jesus
Sounds.
In the sermon, Being Cared For ...,
Rev. Campbell noted that the
scripture lessons had been about a
great amount of caring both in 1
Kings with the angel bringing food
and water to the prophet Elijah as he
fled from Jezebel, and in the Gospel
of Luke with Jesus casting out
demons and healing the man of this
affliction. She said all have
experienced successes and
achievements in life followed by
personal problems and feelings of
despair.
"The good news is that there is
hope because we worship a God of
justice, hope and caring," said Rev.
Campbell, "and we can name our
problems and then do something
about them".
• Then Rev. Campbell referred to
the trial of the man who killed the
child Holly Jones in Toronto, a man
who watched child pornography,
then promptly went and carried out
these murderous actions on an
innocent. "We are called to care
about these things," said Rev.
Campbell, "We must work to dispel
the brutal, the nasty and the cheap in
our society and around us. We must
begin at home by actions that show
our belief that we are all God's
creatures and that each person is
deserving of respect and reverence."
"You can preach until you're blue
in the face, but it will not have the
impact of one caring act radiating
outward and setting the standard in
our own personal lives", continued
Rev. Campbell, "And there should
be no more Holly Jones stories. We
must be able to say that this is not
right or acceptable, and then to take
action."
The collection was taken up by
Maurice Douma, Jeff Cardiff, Frank
Schimanski and Dave McCutcheon.
Sunday school superintendent Elaine
Armstrong reminded the
congregation that next Sunday will
be promotion and awards day for the
Sunday school children. Each child
will receive some recognition.
Our congratulations to church
members Jeff and Cathy Cardiff
who have been chosen as The
Citizen's Brussels Citizens of the
Year.
On Saturday, June 26 at 9:30 a.m.,
a special congregational fun day
event for June has been organized by
Dave and Janet McCutcheon at the
Cranbrook golfcourse owned by
David and Karen Smith. For
information, call 887-9202.

Emergency planning
In case of an emergency, key officials including council
members, area police, fire fighters and paramedics need to
be prepared for the worst. For that reason North Huron
held a table-top exercise on June 18 in council chambers.
