2,108 head of cattle sold through week
Total receipts for Brussels
Livestock for the week ending June
18 were 2.108 head of cattle. 866
lambs and goats.
On Tuesday the fed steers and
heifers sold at prices $2 lower. Fancy
and double-muscle steers and heifers
sold $85 to $90 with sales up to
$94.25. Choice steers and heifers
sold $78 to $83 and second-cut steers
and heifers sold $74 to $77. The
cows traded at prices steady to last
week. On Thursday the good veal
and the heavy veal sold on a steady
market. The plain veal sold under
pressure. The lambs sold on an active
market with lower prices. On Friday
all weights and classes of stockers
sold on a steady market.
There were 633 steers on offer.
Amos M. Martin, Wallenstein, con-
signed three Limousin steers averag-
ing 1,338 lbs. which sold for $94.25.
His overall offering of twelve steers
averaged 1.338 lbs. selling for an
average price of $81.13. Forty steers.
consigned by Cunningham Farms,
Lucan, averaged 1.397 lbs. selling
for an average price of $82.68 with
their top gold steer weighing 1.255
lbs. selling for $90.75. Amos B. Frey,
Wallenstein. consigned one gold
steer weighing 1,535 lbs. which sold
for $88.25. His overall offering of
twelve steers averaged 1,475 lbs.

Summer at Schneider Haus gets
off to a busy start with Immigration
Celebration, June 26 - July 2, cele-
-brating the arrival of the Schneiders-
in the Waterloo area in June of 1807.
New Canadians have a special invi-
tation to visit this week and partici-
pate in many of the daily chores of
the early pioneers and to mark their
own birthplace on a world
map.
On Thursday, July I. Canada Day,
admission is free and horse-drawn
wagon rides with Roger Cober will
be offered for 50 cents per person
from 12:30 to 4 p.m. -
Wool Processing, July 3-9,
explores all of the steps "from fleece
to fabric". Gardens and Gardening
week. July 10-16. focuses on the tra-
ditional Pennsylvania-German four-
square garden and the Schneider's
Schtick, where field crops such as
corn, potatoes. and flax are grown.
The theme Staff of Life: Wheat &
Bread. July 17-23. provides an
excellent opportunity to show off the
'Schneider's brick bakeoven.

Schneider- women will be "firing
up" the oven every day that week..
Folk Medicine week. July 24-30,

Twenty-three heifers consigned by

traditional Mennonite foodways and
staff will be preparing a variety of
-local tasty treats.
During Pickling & Preserving,
Aug. 7-13, a variety of fruits and
vegetables will be preserved in vine-
gar or dried in the drying house.
Dairy Days, Aug. 14-20 will focus
on the butter and cheese-making
activities and visitors are invited
into the Schneider springhouse,
reconstructed in 2002.
Flax Processing, Aug. 21-27 is a
long and labour-intensive process
which involves the whole farm fam-
ily. The summer concludes with
Tramps and Travellers, Aug. 29 -
Sept. 3. In, mid-19th-century
Ontario, villages such as Berlin saw
many tramps and travellers come to
town. Some were peddlers, selling
everything from spices to tinware to
patent medicines, and some were
itinerant artists, calligraphers' and
actors.
In the upper gallery this summer is
FroM Decoy to Decorative which
features the work of wildfowl carver
Al . Forler. 2004 Folk Artist-in-
Residence. Decoys of Ontario's Past
with collector Jim Lackenbauer in
the lower gallery opens mid-June
-and continues into the fall.

cows averaging 1,167 lbs. which sold

There were 10 bulls on offer sell-
