PAGE 16. BLYTH FESTIVAL SALUTE, WEDNESDAY, JUNE 16, 2004.
Amos introduces student to Blyth Festival
By Sarah Mann
Citizen staff
After working as a parts manager
for a petroleum tanker company.
Neven Stoski decided enough was
enough.
Stoski took the job thinking it
would only last for the summer after
high school but he found himself
sitting at the same desk five years
later.
"I did quite a bit of (theatre] in
high school. I came from a small
town and I was really the only tech
person that we had. Then I moved to
Regina and worked for five years
and didn't like that at all. I wanted to
do something I enjoyed and get paid
for it. I remembered there was that
theatre thing 1 used to do so why
not?"
The 29-year-old Stoski will be
starting his fourth year in the
technical theatre program at the
University of Regina after spending
his first summer in Blyth as the
props and paint production assistant
at the Festival.
"I just more or less help in the
props and paint department and
everything in between. Right
now I'm out at the grandstand
doing stuff that's not props or
paint."
Stoski was introduced to the
Festival through long-time
participant and University of Regina
professor Janet Amos.
Amos told Stoski he should look
into Blyth so he sent in a resume.
"I do a lot of work at the Globe
Theatre in Regina and everybody
that I talked to there said [Blyth) was
a great place to work so when I got
the call I was like. 'yeah, for
sure'."
Although this is Stoski's first time
in Blyth he has lots of experience
under his belt. Aside from his work
in high school, Stoski has painted
sets at the Globe for the past three
shows and last summer he worked at
a small theatre in Saskatchewan
doing set design and construction
there.
"That was interesting, trying to
build two sets with $2,000. 'OK, I
guess I'm going to reuse the set I just
made.—
Stoski had been to Ontario once
before when he drove from
Regina to Cape Breton island last
fall.
"We stopped in Stratford for a
show so we sort of toured around the
area."
Stoski says he doesn't miss Regina
at the moment but he hasn't been
gone for that long yet either.
"My parents are back there but we
e-mail back and forth, make a call
here and there, so right now I'm
okay. We'll see what happens in
August."
Although Stoski says he enjoys
seeing the sets he helped create on
stage he admits to being very critical
when he does.
"It's fun 'cause there will be little
things that go on and you'll think,
`oh yeah, that thing was a pain'.
You're very critical of your
stuff."
Stoski says he has enjoyed his stay
in Blyth so far and that there is no
shortage of props for him to work
with.
"We have a really decent selection
here. There's a lot of stuff that we're
slowly going through. I was really
quite impressed with the facility
here."
