Entertainment & Leisure Theatre review Stratford's 'Guys and Dolls' good as it gets A Guy and his Doll Scott Wentworth as Sky Masterson and Cynthia Dale as Sarah Brown prove what a little chemistry can do as they get close in Havana during this scene from Stratford Festival's Guys and Dolls. (Coopershoots/John Curnd photo) By Bonnie Gropp • Citizen editor Does it get any better? The Stratford Festival's production of Guys and Dolls is as good as theatre gets. From an incredible cast to the amazing music of Frank Loesser and lively script by Jo Swering and Abe Burrows, this tale of gamblers and their girls is a visual masterpiece and delightfully entertaining. Guys and Dolls is a musical fable of 1930s Broadway, a world of saints and sinners. Based on Damon Runyon's The Idyll of Miss Sarah Brown, the story brings together high roller Sky Masterson and Salvation Army mission officer Sarah Brown. With a dazzling smile and slick charm, his Masterson breezes into town with Gene Kelly-style. Wentworth ably balances the rogue with the gentleman, creating the perfect mystery man. In the role of Brown, Cynthia Dale proves why she is one of the best theatrical performers in the country. Her If I were a Bell is one of the many high spots, the perfect showcase for her comedic talents. And as expected her lovely voice soars on the ballads. In The Stratford Beacon Herald's 2004 Festival edition, Sheila McCarthy said she has been "waiting a long time to play" the part of Adelaide and it shows. She takes on the role as if she was born to do so, with a sweetness and vulnerability that woos you. And while Geordie Johnson may not be as cozy in the role of Detroit, it's probably only noticeable because of the company he's keeping. It had to be tough work measuring up to this group. Yet, one of the secondary characters does manage it and well. Bruce Dow as Nicely-Nicely Johnson stops the show with the energetic rendition of Sit Down, You're Rockin' the Boat. Director Kelly Robinson deserves a pat on the back for the fast pace, which zips from scene to scene with barely a heartbeat between. And Debra Hanson's designs of plaid and stripes, vivid colours and texture. cwrietatyte. s a world that's both gritty and It is the kind of entertainment we all wait for, the total package of romance, fun, a story to tell-and all of it delivered with flash and style.
