The Citizen, 2004-06-17, Page 3Priorities in order
Meeting NHL draft hopeful Justin Peters was definitely the priority of kids last weekend at a
fundraising barbecue in Blyth, but Jacob Abbot, with Ang Frazer wasn't about to let it interrupt
his lunch. Proceeds from the day are being donated to the Emergency Services Training
Centre in Blyth. (Vicky Bremner photo)

United Church.
The gospel reading was from Luke
7:36. The Responsive Psalm 5 was led
by 011ie Craig. The hymn Beneath the
Cross of Jesus was sung.
Rev. Eugen Bannerman's message to
the adults was Historical Vignette:
Rev. Telford at Blyth. Rev. Bannerman
started out with a quote of Isaac
Newton's: "If I have seen farther it is
because have stood on the shoulders
of others."
The doctrine of the church has been
based on many others. One of the
giants of Blyth United Church was
Rev. George Telford, minister from
1916 to 1926. Blyth was his first
pastoral charge.
Rev. Telford was a community,
minded person, involved with the
Memorial Hall which was built in
memory of the soldiers in the First
World War. Rev. Telford carved a
wooden plaque with all the soldiers'
names on it. It is still in a place of
honour in Memorial Hall.
Rev. Telford was very interested in
music and directed a cantata for the
Blyth Choral Society. Rev. Telford was
here when St. Andrews Presbyterian
and Queen Street Methodist churches
joined to eventually become Blyth
United Church.
