Stratford Festival
off to great start
The Stratford Festival's 2004
season began officially June 1 with
the gala opening of William
Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's
Dream. Two hundred guests toasted
the Festival's 52nd season at a pre-
show dinner in the Festival's Paul D.
Fleck Marquee before joining the
full house in the Festival Theatre for
the opening performance.
Attending the gala in support of
their colleagues were Stratford
Festival artists James Blendick and
Lucy Peacock (recently returned
from the Tony-nominated production
of King Lear on Broadway); Seana
McKenna and her husband, director
Miles Potter; Martha Henry; Chick
Reid; and _ Marshall Borden.
attending with his wife, actress Lee
Meriwether. Festival alumni at the
celebration included Brent Carver.
Loreena McKennitt and CoIm Feore,
arriving to cheer on his wife, Donna,
the choreographer and assistant
director of a Midsummer Nightly
Dream. Also at the gala were Festival
artistic director Richard Monette and
executive director Antoni Cimolino,
and the direct)or of A Midsummer
Nightly Dream, Leon Rubin.
Attendees from government
included the Hon. Gar Knutson,
Federal Minister of tate (New and
Emerging Cultures); provincial
cabinet ministers the Hon. Jim
Bradley (Tourism and Recreation),
the Hon. Madeleine Meilleur
(Culture) and the Hon. Greg Sobara
(Finance); Perth-Middlesex MP Gary
Schellenberger and MPP John
Wilkinson; and Stratford mayor Dan
Mathieson.
Five more productions opened last
week: The Count of Monte Cristo
June 2, Guys and Dolls on Thursday,
Macbeth on Friday, Timon of Athens
on Saturday and finally Anything
Goes on Sunday, June 6. These
productions have been playing to
preview audiences over the last
several weeks.
A tribute
Arts/crafts
festival set
for July
The annual Festival of Arts and
Crafts in Goderich is set to begin on
July 9 with a wide variety of hand-
made crafts for everyone and
admission is free.
This outdoor event, with its
beautiful park-like setting, has 170
vendors, 40 of them are new,
offering everything from quality
crafted jewellery, clothing, garden
decor, gourmet foods and wood
items.
On July 9 vendors will be open
from noon until 8 p.m., July 10 from
10 a.m. to ,6 p.m. and July 11 from
noon until 4 p.m.
There will also be live
entertainment throughout the
weekend in the new bandstand.
Casual lunch and snacks will be
available, but for more substanital
fare, there are plenty of nearby
restaurants.
A used book sale sponsored by the
local Rotary Club will be held on
July 10 and 11.

Gordon, a Barenaked Ladies tribute band, was among the entertainment at this year's annual
Brussels Lions elimination draw. The huge regularly sold-out event was held at the arena on
Saturday night, when ticket buyers waited in anticipation to see if they would be a lucky winner
