Council sends letter o displeasure to MPAC i By Elyse DeBruyn Citizen staff Morris-Turnberry council. instructed clerk-treasurer, Nancy Michie, to draft a letter expressing concern and displeasure with the Municipal Property Assessment Co- operation (MPAC) system, after she presented it to council at the June 1 meeting for consideration. In a letter addressed to council. Michie said it was brought to her attention that an assessment for a house and shed from 2001 and 2002 has not been assessed yet and taxes not levied. "So we did a review to see what is happening (something we should not have to do) because we have sent our building permits faithfully to MPAC - that is our part," Michie said in the letter. She said "we came up with a large list of building permits" and no new assessment showed on the parcel data. Michie recommended (at the May 25 meeting) sending a letter to MPAC There were seven tables of euchre in play on Wednesday, June 2 at the Women's Institute Hall. Winners were: high lady, Aileen Leddy; second high lady, Lois Chamney; most lone hands, Mary voicing "our displeasure" and asking "for immediate response to our delayed assessments," as well as sending a copy of it to inform Carol Mitchell of the situation. She said MPAC, which currently manages more than four million properties in their database, called and did not realize that they had a backlog of permits. They reviewed the list and have found three definite (properties) not assessed from 2001 and nine not assessed from 2002, but they have not reviewed the 2003 data. "They have apologized, but that is not going to help the taxpayer facing a bill of three years of taxes in one year. They said tharthey do not know if other municipalities have the same problem, as they have not had a complaint from them," said Michie. Council received a letter from MPAC and it was presented to them during that meeting, stating that as part of the ongoing program to update property information, the MPAC is expanding its reinspection prog am. Taylor; high man, Laura Johnston; second high man, Mervyn Schneider; lone hands, Stuart Chamney. The final euchre for the season is Wednesday, June 9 at 8 p.m. Inspections are scheduled to occur from May to the end of August this year and MPAC's goal is to reinspect and verify property information for about 315,000 properties across Ontario. "Inspections are one of the ways we ensure our information is up-to- date and the values we provide to property owners and to municipalities for taxation purposes are accurate," said the MPAC letter, signed by Dennis McMeekin, account manager for municipal relations zone I. "(This) sure destroys faith in them The Belgrave UCW Evening Unit met at the home of Lorna Cook, on Tuesday, June 2, with Mabel Wheeler in charge of the meeting. She welcomed everyone and thanked Mrs. Cook for hosting the meeting. She read two poems, He Cannot Read His Tombstone When He Is Dead, and Our Lamps. Muriel Coultes read the minutes of the last meeting and gave the treasurer's report. Mrs. Wheeler reported she had sent three cards in the past month. The roll call was answered by "What you remember about your Grade 8 graduation" by the 14 women present. Plans were made for the annual (MPAC)," said mayor Dorothy Kelly. "It sure does. I was really upset," said Michie. During an inspection, the staff at MPAC will verify the property information they currently have on file as well as collecting data on any changes that may have occurred since the last property inspection. All changes to properties will be updated on the MPAC database and, depending on the nature of the change, may result in a new value. The MPAC letter said their staff will carry proper identification and will identify themselves to property over-80 birthday party, to be held this year on Wednesday, July 21 at 2 p.m. in the basement of the church. Mrs. Wheeler introduced a video she had purchased entitled Cotton Patch Gospel. This is a humorous and toe-tapping way of relating owners during the reinspection process. MPAC has also developed two information pieces for property owners, in the event that the owner may not be home when staff members arrive for an inspection. The first explains that MPAC has verified the data for their property and that no follow-up by the property owner is required at that time. The second outlines the information needed to complete the reinspection and asks the property owner to call MPAC customer service. two of the gospels in modern language and places.
