If you need a little lift and a song in

At the Branch
By Jo-Ann McDonald
This week has celebrated an
important date in history, that all
Canadians hopefully had a chance to
reflect upon. It was the 60th
anniversary of D-Day, the invasion
of the beaches of Normandy on June
6. Operation Overlord saw a land,
sea and air massive attack at Juno
which later became known as the
spring growth. Farm machinery is out
and about keeping tabs on the weather
for the week and getting the jobs done
as needed. Plant sales and gardening
activity have kept lots of folks in the
dirt as they ponder the big question of
life and growth. Who couldn't enjoy
these beautiful days?
Two familiar folks were visiting in
the village this past week catching up
on the village news. Richard and
George are guests with Ken and Laura
Barbour, their former neighbours.
They've been making the rounds to
share their stories of Vancouver Island
and other travel tales with their many
friends here. Richard and George
always fit right in here as their love for
food and conversation meshed with
our community. Good to see you guys.
beginning of the end of the war.
Allied Forces captured the
beaches and pushed back the
Germans. Day by day, they liberated
France and the rest of Europe until
the end of WWII in August 1945.
The Friday night supper at the
Brussels Legion, of chicken breast
was great. This week is chicken
wings and fries.
Speaking of fun and food the Lions
Chit did its usual good stuff on
Saturday night at the BMG
Community Centre. Some traditions
are just keepers. Jeff and Cathy
Cardiff and crew brought forth good
food and the Lions members, partners
and lots of 4-H helpers topped this up
by serving beverages and ice-cream
sundaes of one's choice. Throw in
good company, nice music and the
laughter of children it was all the
ingreuients for a very good time.
A high spot for me was having a
visit with Phyllis Beacom and
daughter Hope with husband Ron.
Phyllis's husband Bill was the bank
manager here and brought the idea of
the elimination draw to Brussels many
years ago. They had the good sense to
Members of the Branch were
guest judges at the Blyth Inn for the
final Steelback Brewery karaoke
night. Having a great time and
hearing some really great singers
were Julie Harrison, Lisa Glanville,
Samara Josling, Jo-Ann McDonald
and Judy Lee.
Saturday was euchre at the
Branch. There were 10 tables at
play
The winners were Lloyd and
Lillian Appleby with 76 points.
Coming in second were Joanne
McDonald and Dorothy Carter with
71 points and close behind was Ivan
Bennewies and Ken Engel with 70
points.
The not-so-lucky card players
were Stuart and Lois Chamney with
50 points. The lone hand winners
were Helen Dobson (four) and Len
Archambault (five).
Euchre is every two weeks.
The fish fry crew was cooking last
week for the Blyth Legion at the
Lions Park. They had a games
afternoon, then an open fish fry
which was attended by about 100
people.
Head chef was John Harrison with
Lisa Glanville, Terry and Judy
Buchanan and Jo-Ann McDonald as
helpers. -
The Sunday night singles dance
had a nice crowd out to enjoy the
music of Ken Scott. Dances are
