Exciting things happening at Brussels Library

Exciting things are happening at
the Brussels Library branch.
Librarian Sue Nichol is overseeing
the creation of a discovery centres
for children and a teen room.
The changes occurred as a result
of a conference attended by Trudy
Broome from the county library.
"She saw a presentation on discov-
ery centre's for children and the
importance of tactile play."
Nichol said as they have been try-
ing to find ways to increase usage at
the Brussels branch, Broome sug-
gested the idea of a discovery centre.
Told to solicit community support.
Nichol followed the 'in for a penny,
in for a pound' way of thinking. "I
had always wanted a teen room and
when they said I could go out and
ask for funding I decided to go for
both."
She approached the local
Optimists and Lions as well as the
Huron East trust fund committee and
the municipality. To date, she has
received $1,500 from each of the
first three. Huron East is looking
after the painting and electrical.
The teen room, located in Nichol's
former office, with windows
fronting onto Turnberry Street, has
been given a bright new look. "I
wanted fun colours, a place where
kids would come in. a comfy, fun
environment for them to chill."
Once complete the room will have
a café table, comfy chairs and cush-
ions.
While the room will also hold
books for young adults, as well as
the video, cassettes and CDs avail-
able through the library, Nichol men-
tioned that her main concern is to
provide aspace. "I don't care if they
never take anything out. I want them
to have a safe place and hopefully
the interest in what the library has to
offer will follow."
Nichol said she would also like to
get Human Resources Development
Canada involved through programs
and with information and resources.
The children's area will house the
Gates computer with kids' educa-
tional games and stories. A $1,500
contribution will complete one dis-
covery centre, which Nichol expects
to be travel. "It's something that will
appeal to both boys and girls."
The centre will be tactile, connect-
ed to the sense of touch, with pup-
pets, puzzles, blocks, toys, and of
course, books.
"It will be a place to come and
play - parents and kids."

Big throw
Although it's a sport for those with strong arms, the girls
from Blyth Public School had no trouble heaving the ball
during the shot put competition at the annual track and field
day on May 26. Jennifer Williamson shows her fellow com-
petitors how it's done with one huge throw. (Elyse DeBruyn photo)
