Obituaries GEORGE NORMAN HAMM The Blyth community was saddened to hear of the sudden passing of a long-time businessman and friend. George Norman Hamm passed away peacefully at Kirkland Lake on Sunday. May 23, 2004. He was in his 72nd year. It was in 1947 that Mr. Hamm started working as a mechaniC apprentice for his father's car repair business. He retired from Hamm's Car Sales Ltd. as owner and operator in 2001. George enjoyed nature and many outdoor activities such as fishing and trapshooting. His greatest love, however, was for family. George was a dedicated husband, father and grandfather. Mourning his loss most deeply is his beloved wife, the former Mary McCaughey. He was the loving lather of Dennis Hamm of Blyth and Rosemary and Wayne Park of Clinton. Grandpa will be forever treasured in the hearts of grandchildren Jeremiah, Duncan,. Brittnee and Daniel Hamm and Michael, Lucas. Jacob and Joshua Park. Mr. Hamm is survived as well by his brother Murray and Donna Hamm, Blyth and by his many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his brother Kenneth and his parents George and Sadie (Gillespie) Hamm. Friends were received at the Blyth Visitation Centre of Falconer Funeral Homes Ltd. on Wednesday, May 26 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. The funeral service was held Thursday, May 27 at 2 p.m. Rev. Dr. Eugen Bannerman of Blyth United Church and Father John Johnson of St. Michael's Roman Catholic Church officiated. Interment was in St. Michael's Cemetery. Grandsons, Jeremiah, Duncan and Daniel Hamm as well as Gordon Jenkins, Malcolm Brooks and Jamie Caldwell were pallbearers. As an expression of sympathy, memorial donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the charity of one's choice would be apprec- iated. When they, received the Holy Spirit. immediately they all spoke and understood each other in their own native tongues. It had been promised by Jesus that a counsellor, the Spirit of Truth, would be sent to God's people and thus Pentecost fulfilled this promise when the Holy Spirit descended on the people as they met to pray together and talk of the wonders of God. Rev. Campbell then had the congregation turn to their reference booklet and read together the section entitled God the Holy Spirit. Collection was taken up by Bill Aitchison, Brian Armstrong and Doug McArter. When the service ended, the congregation was invited downstairs to enjoy a finger food luncheon served by Mary Huether and Leona Armstrong. Proceeds from this luncheon will go to help others through Presbyterians Sharing. A special thanks was given to Holly McCutcheon of Grandma's Attic who held a fundraising sale for the church. last week. Winner of the quilt draw was Cathrine Campbell. The members of the 150th Anniversary committee will meet on Tuesday, June 1 at 7:30 pm. Greeting at Melville Presbyterian Church May 23 were Jim and Leona Armstrong. Rev. Cathrine Campbell introduced the children's story IOOF church Morning Star Rebekah Lodge, Brussels met on Tuesday, May 25 in the lodge rooms. The church service for Rebekah - IOOF will -be Sunday, June 6 at Brussels United Church. The congregation is invited for lunch following the service. which was a speech given by Kasey King on the Underground Railway. In her presentation. The Conductor. Kasey took on the role of Harriet Tubman to narrate her story of slavery in the cotton fields, her escape to Canada with the help of abolitionists and how she returned time after time as Moses, a conductor assisting others on the route to freedom in Canada. Kasey gave much insight into this woman's heroic. actions in helping her people. The scripture lesson this morning was Exodus 15: 11 -18; Acts 16: 16 - 34; and John 17: 20 - 26 read by Rev. Campbell with assistance from service Noble Grand Sister Elva Brown reported on the Huron-Perth District meeting held at Stratford. Laurel Kowatsch is DDP for 2004-2005. Campbell continued the theme of Kasey's speech about slavery. She referred to the scripture lesson of Acts 16 whereby Paul cast out the spirit of divination from the slave girl in the market place, thereby healing her but to her owners this made her valueless because now she could no longer be a fortune-teller. Because of this healing Paul and Silas were cast into prison.
