The Brussels Cadet Corps spent
the long weekend at Fort Henry
near Kingston. Fifteen Cadets and
two officers left at the crack of
dawn on Sunday morning from the
Legion for the five-hour bus trip.
The purpose was to attend the
Fort Henry Soldiers Overnight
Program. It is a course geared to
Grade 7 and 8 youths that immerses
them into a British North American
soldier's life in a fort.
Upon their arrival, they were

surprised their teacher, Mary Hall with a present for her 27
years of teaching. Hall, who is retiring, received a
scrapbook made of her students' artwork and messages of
what each student will miss about her. Austin Johnston
hands the scrapbook to Hall. (Elyse DeBruyn photo)

Ah, warmth and sunshine —
pretty fine few days we enjoyed on
the weekend. So many things just
go so much better when the
weather is nice. Gardening
becomes a joy with the sun on your
back. Family gatherings are more
relaxed when the crowd can be
outside. Games of ball and soccer
are fun without a cold wind for
competition.
The month of May has brought
new life to Tory Hill. Babies and
spring are a wonderful combination
and our neighbourhood has two
new wee girls in our midst. Allyson
is the newest member in the Marc
and Trish Barbour home and Erin
joined the world of Andy and Sarah
Overholt.
Welcome to our world — we're
pretty pleased with the gifts of
spring this year.
The village was a busy spot on
Saturday with folks checking out
the wares. Garage and lawn sales
are lots of fun and a benefit to
many folks. A house gets cleared
out, the clutter is diminished and
the new owner is pleased with the
purchase. So by the movements of
articles observed there are a lot of
happy folks.
Pentecost Sunday was celebrated
in fine form at the United Church
when families and friends
celebrated as new members joined
the church. Bibles, certificates and
candles were presented to Kari
Bell. Jordan Campbell, Pam and
Michelle Cousins, Zach Hoegy,
Christopher, Ryan and Travis Jutzi,
Nathan Prior, Wade Stephenson
and Lindsay Watson.
Grace McCall and Murray
Edwards were welcomed to the
church family by transfer of
membership.
The Sunday school children held
a parade to celebrate the winds of
God in our lives and the new
members in our church.
Enjoy the days of June.
Bye now, Betty G.W.
Cadet Corps spends weekend at Fort Henry
assigned a military interpreter who
took the Cadets through the history
of the fort and of British North
America as it was known before
becoming Canada. They learned
military drills of the period and the
Cadets were very eager to learn.
They observed a military parade
put on by the Military Guard and
the Pipe and Drum Band. The
Cadets were dressed in period
costumes — the scarlet tunics — and
learned of barrack life. They toured
the fort, which included a
classroom.
On Sunday evening the guide
took the Cadets on the ghost walk of
the fort which went down into the
tunnels. The reverse fire room
which was used as an escape route
for rebel prisoners was said to be
haunted. The Officer's Quarters are
reported to be as well.
On Monday morning, it was
clean-up and inspection, which the
Cadets passed with a job well done.
After inspection there was time for
more period rifle drills.
They returned Sunday evening.
June is seniors' month and the
senior chairmen, Charles and Grace
Procter are planning a luncheon for
Tuesday, June 22.
Congratulations to Comrade
Andy Overholt and wife Sarah on
the birth of daughter Erin Jane.
Comrade Mel McArter, suffered a
fall in January and has waited until
late April for surgery on his
shoulder. He now has quite a few
