Friends open new Centre
On May 30. the Friends of Hullett
will be opening the new Hullett
Marsh Interpretive Centre at the
Hullett Provincial Wildlife Area
(HPWA) located near Clinton.
The Centre was made possible
through a grant from the Ontario
Trillium Foundation and has been
completed after two years of
planning and six months of
construction.
Designed to showcase the multiple
habitats contained within the
HPWA, the Centre contains
examples of the flora and fauna
found within the 2100 ha. of man-
made wetland.
The Centre features a classroom
equipped to help teachers and youth
On May 5, 7 area Health Care
Professionals attended a workshop
in Goderich which focused on the
role of physicians in implementing a
screening program for woman
abuse.
The session was sponsored by the
Ontario College of Family
Physicians in partnership with the
Huron County Health Unit; Huron
County Child Abuse Prevention
Committee; Huron Perth Centre for
Children and Youth; Women's
Shelter and Counseling Services of
Huron and the Huron Perth
Children's Aid Society. '
The keynote speaker was Dr.
Philip Squires of Stratford.
Violence against women is a
serious health issue that affects
many aspects of a woman's physical
and emotional health. Many women
who are abused may never be seen
by any other health professional but
group leaders provide the best in
environmental education.
Activities will begin with the
official opening at 9 a.m. and will
continue all day. At 10:15 a.m. the
Friends of Hullett will he holding
their annual general meeting to
discuss their ongoing efforts to
maintain and improve the multi-user
site and to elect the incoming
members of their board.
Children's programming will take
place during the morning and
various activities and displays will
be held on the grounds during the
day.
The' HPWA has over 30 km. of
dykes and trails, and the 'Friends'
encourage families to take this
their doctor.
The trust relationship between a
woman and her doctor offers an
important opportunity for a woman
to receive the help that she
needs.
The New England Journal of
Medicine has reported that one in
four women attending at an
emergency ward for any reason were
victims of violence.
Dr. Squires. a pediatrician from
Stratford who also provides services
at Wingham Hospital. attended a
training session in Toronto last
October sponsored by the Ontario
College of Family Physicians to
become a peer trainer.
The program presented by Dr.
Squires focused on screening,
identification and intervention for
women abuse. Workshop
participants will receive 4
MAINPRO C credits from the
opportunity to explore one of the
best wildlife areas in Ontario. A
barbecue lunch will be available for
those who don't wish to pack a
picnic.
The wildlife area was developed
by the Ontario Ministry of Natural
Resources and Ducks Unlimited
(Canada). and is. managed by the
Friends of HuIlett Inc.
The interpretive centre 'is located
at Hydro Line Road northeast of
Clinton and can be reach by going
north from Hwy 8 at the Kinburn
Line or east from Hwy 4 on Hydro
Line Road.

protocols. All women will be asked
about past and present abuse as part
of the initial screening interview of
patients.
