The May meeting of the Melville
Guild was a special one with guests
from Ripley, Belgrave and Brussels
area in attendance. It was held in the
church parlour on May 18. There
were eight members and 17 guests
present.
Janna Dodds and Mary Huether
were in charge of the devotions. Rev.
Cathrine Campbell welcomed
everyone and Mrs. Dodds read the
Call to Worship. She sang a solo,
Because He Lives, accompanied by
Karen Cardiff.

Left to mourn his passing are his
loving children, Kathy and Peter
Hofer of Appin, Neil of Timmins,
Janice and Ray Becker of RR2,

Vanessa of London and Gail of

He is survived by one brother, Don
of Mosa Twp., sisters-in-law Melba
Fish, Mary Reid and Grace Reid,
brother-in-law Dick (Shirley) Reid,
and many nieces, nephews and
cousins.
Lawrence learned early in life that
hard work was required. He left
school at a young age to help on the
family farm in Mosa Twp. when his
own father became ill. He was soon
running the cattle and cash crop farm
as well as working full time to
support his ever-growing family.

Dodds read the meditation and then
sang a solo, There's Something
About That Name.
Come, Let Us sing was sung and

The correspondence was read and
He was a quiet yet strong father,
letting his wife look after the raising
of the children and the discipline.
Lawrence worked for much of his
life in the lumber business and even
after his official retirement, he
continued to work, but this time at a
hobby he had loved all his life.
Through his photography business,
he captured new beginnings,
graduations and celebratory events
for many people in his community,
as he had done in his family's life for
decades.
He was involved in his community
as well, holding various positions
with the Glencoe and area
snowmobiling club and the No. 12
club.
He was an elder at Cameron
Presbyterian Church before it
closed. He then moved to Burns
Presbyterian Church, Kilmartin.
Creating beautiful things was a
passion, whether building a house
for his new bride or a boat as he did
Jeanne Kirkby gave the treasurer's
report.
The roll call was answered with

and telling their plans for the
summer.
Mrs. Huether introduced the guest
speaker Shannon Scott from Blyth.
Mrs. Scott taught music in Thailand
for three years. Before returning
home she spent six months touring
Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and
Vietnam. She showed pictures and

during their early married life,
Lawrence carried that through to his
later years, lovingly handcrafting a
keepsake wooden box for each of his
grandchildren.
In recent years, he contributed to
the restoration of the historic train
station in Glencoe, helping to return
it to its former glory. His oil
paintings now quietly adorn his
home and his railroad models wait at
the station.
Lawrence never truly recovered
from the loss of his wife three years
ago and the past two years had been
difficult as.he struggled with his loss
of independence. He can now rest
quietly with Marjorie, He will be
missed.
The funeral took place at the Van
Heck Funeral Home in Glencoe on
Wednesday, May 26.

Foundation or the Canadian Cancer
