Jean Cook of St. Marys and formerly of Blyth passed away peacefully at Wildwood Care Centre, St. Marys on Thursday, May 20, 2004. She was in her 89th year. She, was the beloved wife of the late Bordon Cook. Mrs. Cook was the loving mother and mother-in-law of Karen and Bill Zimmerman of Stratford, the late Betty Jean Finnigan, who predeceased her in 1993 and the late Garry Finnigan who passed away in 2000 and Robert and Betty Cook of Glencoe. She was the cherished grandmother of Brent and Cathy Zimmerman, Dean Finnigan and Sandra Dale, Jenny Cook and Adrian Rose and Danielle Cook and great- grandmother of Emily and Allison Zimmerman. Mrs. Cook was the dear sister of Ross Turvey of Wingham and Helen Gowing of Blyth. She will also be remembered by special friends Barbara Snell and Rose Taman. Mrs. Cook was predeceased by sisters Adella Shaw, Myrtle Vodden and Evelyn Turvey, brother Lloyd Turvey and infant brother Glen Turvey. Jean was born in Morris Twp. and attended Brussels Continuation School. Along with her husband Bordon she owned and operated the Superior Food Market in Blyth for 14 years. Among Jean's many interests was bridge which she played for over 58 years. She was a member of the Eastern Star for 25 years and a member of the Legion Ladies Auxiliary. Friends were received at the Blyth Visitation Centre of the Falconer Funeral Homes Ltd., 402 Queen St., Blyth on Friday from 2 - 4 and 7 - 9 p.m. where the funeral service was held on Saturday, May 22 at 2 p.m. Interment was in Blyth Union Cemetery. Rev. Dr. Eugen Bannerman of Blyth United Church officiated. As expressions of sympathy, memorial donations to the charity of one's choice would be greatly appreciated. LAWRENCE EDWARD MCVICAR It is with great sadness that the family of Lawrence McVicar of Beanie Haven Retirement Home, Wardsville, formerly of Newbury, announces his passing on May 23, 2004. He has gone to join his beloved wife, Marjorie, who predeceased him in 2001. He was ;1 The May meeting of the Melville Guild was a special one with guests from Ripley, Belgrave and Brussels area in attendance. It was held in the church parlour on May 18. There were eight members and 17 guests present. Janna Dodds and Mary Huether were in charge of the devotions. Rev. Cathrine Campbell welcomed everyone and Mrs. Dodds read the Call to Worship. She sang a solo, Because He Lives, accompanied by Karen Cardiff. Sing Them Over Again to Me was sung and Mrs. Huether read the Left to mourn his passing are his loving children, Kathy and Peter Hofer of Appin, Neil of Timmins, Janice and Ray Becker of RR2, Blyth, David of Dutton, Randy and Vanessa of London and Gail of Ottawa. He will be greatly missed by his loved grandchildren Louis and Janine Hofer, Jennifer and Meghan McVicar, Christopher and Katelynn Becker, Brian and Krista McVicar and Nathaniel and Sarah McVicar. He is survived by one brother, Don of Mosa Twp., sisters-in-law Melba Fish, Mary Reid and Grace Reid, brother-in-law Dick (Shirley) Reid, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Lawrence learned early in life that hard work was required. He left school at a young age to help on the family farm in Mosa Twp. when his own father became ill. He was soon running the cattle and cash crop farm as well as working full time to support his ever-growing family. scripture from II King 5: 1-15. Mrs. Dodds read the meditation and then sang a solo, There's Something About That Name. Come, Let Us sing was sung and the offering was collected. Mrs. Dodds gave a prayer for peace to close this part of the meeting. Leona Armstrong presided over the business. She thanked everyone for helping with the events of the previous month and the minutes of the last meeting were read and approved. The correspondence was read and He was a quiet yet strong father, letting his wife look after the raising of the children and the discipline. Lawrence worked for much of his life in the lumber business and even after his official retirement, he continued to work, but this time at a hobby he had loved all his life. Through his photography business, he captured new beginnings, graduations and celebratory events for many people in his community, as he had done in his family's life for decades. He was involved in his community as well, holding various positions with the Glencoe and area snowmobiling club and the No. 12 club. He was an elder at Cameron Presbyterian Church before it closed. He then moved to Burns Presbyterian Church, Kilmartin. Creating beautiful things was a passion, whether building a house for his new bride or a boat as he did Jeanne Kirkby gave the treasurer's report. The roll call was answered with everyone introducing themselves and telling their plans for the summer. Mrs. Huether introduced the guest speaker Shannon Scott from Blyth. Mrs. Scott taught music in Thailand for three years. Before returning home she spent six months touring Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam. She showed pictures and spoke about her trip. Mrs. Dodds thanked her and presented her with a gift. during their early married life, Lawrence carried that through to his later years, lovingly handcrafting a keepsake wooden box for each of his grandchildren. In recent years, he contributed to the restoration of the historic train station in Glencoe, helping to return it to its former glory. His oil paintings now quietly adorn his home and his railroad models wait at the station. Lawrence never truly recovered from the loss of his wife three years ago and the past two years had been difficult as.he struggled with his loss of independence. He can now rest quietly with Marjorie, He will be missed. The funeral took place at the Van Heck Funeral Home in Glencoe on Wednesday, May 26. Donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated as expressions of sympathy. Mrs. Dodds and Mrs. Huether served an Asian lunch. The June meeting will be held at Dona Knight's cottage at Bayfield with a potluck supper at 6 p.m. Members are asked to be at Melville Church at 5 p.m. for transportation.
