From the Minister's Study Blyth CRC pastor shares his journey By Pastor John Kuperus Blyth Christian Reformed Church My family and I came to Blyth on June 1. 2002. I wanted to share a little of my journey with you. This is my first time to write in The Citizen. so this will be about myself. As a past4 my job is to point others to God, so this is a little out of character for me. I was born on Aug. 30, 1963 in Sussex. NJ to Miles and Ann Kuperus. I am from a family of six, with two brothers and three sisters. I am the fourth child. My father was a dairy farmer and I loved the farm. My plan was to follow in my father's footsteps and be a dairy farmer. Being in the fields and around animals, and seeing nature at work was wonderful, which I really enjoyed. I treasure that time spent on the farm and with my father. After high school, I worked on the farm for one year and decided to pursue college training, attending Reformed Bible College in Grand Rapids. Michigan. This educational choice meant that I would be leaving the farm and leaving the footsteps of my father, which was difficult for my dad and me. After one year in a Bible college. I switched to a liberal arts education going to Calvin College in Michigan and then to Upsala College in New Jersey. As part of my university training I spent a semester abroad in Germany and Austria. I graduated with a degree in business. In August 1987, I became the owner of a 6,000-square foot store - Western Auto in Sussex. I changed the name to Farmside Supplies and transformed it into a feed and pet store. This was a real challenge, dealing with people who are paying their bills. growing the business, dealing with employees and keeping the right, and enough, products on hand. After years of being on the edge, the business stabilized and I learned a lot. In Jane 22, 1996 I got married to Helen Feenstra. In 1997 we had a son. Joshua. In 1998 we had a daughter. Brianna and in 1999 we had a daughter, Nicole. In 2001, we had another daughter, Alisha. In 2003. Karissa was born and she is a Canadian. In August of 1998, my family and I left Sussex. NJ to live in Israel. I felt a call for ministry ever since I was a child, and my wife and I decided that it was best to be in seminary when the kids were young. Our first college/university was Jerusalem University College in Jerusalem, Israel. I had to learn Hebrew for seminary training, so I felt that Israel was the best place to learn Hebrew. The next year we went to Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, CA and studied there for two years. The following year, we moved to Grand Rapids, to do the Special Program for Ministerial Candidacy (SPMC) at Calvin Theological Seminary. The final step in the seminary education was doing an intern project, which brought us to Blyth for one year. Blyth Christian Reformed Church decided to call me to be their pastor in August, 2003. I accepted the call. As a husband and dad, I want to be the best I can be and to have fun along the way. Looking it over As a pastor, my goal is to be an instrument of God to bring light to darkness by telling others about what God has done for me and his good news. A few observations about Canada. Canadians call intersections. concessions. Americans make concessions to business deals. A student is in Grade 1 in Canada and in the States the student is in first grade. Canadian health care in comparison to health care in the States, is a more sane for cost. These are just a few observations. We are happy to be in this community. This feels like I am returning to my roots of farming. In New Jersey, the farming is between Sunday 9:30 a.m. 10:30 a.m. 7:30 p.m. Monday 7:30 p.m. Wednesday 6:30 - 8:00 p.m. 7:00 - 8:30 p.m. 7:00 p.m. the rocks and on the hills. Here the fields are long and straight with few rocks.
