11-15s off to solid start
Happy birthday to Bill Eckmier
last week. The regulars at the coffee
shop made sure that he had an
enjoyable. day.
The weather on the holiday
weekend was not very nice but it did
not dampen the holiday spirit at our
house. Missy was home from
Thursday night and Sarah arrived on
Saturday. Sunday's wiener roast
turned into a gathering in the shop
but our guests, Edna McLellan, Neil
Hatt, Bill Clark, Andrew Smith and
Peggy and Paige Keffer did not
seem to mind the change of location.
Congratulations to Tern-Ann Van
Ness on her wedding this past
Saturday.
Have a good week everyone.
Adrian and Shirley Verstoep,
Manion Harrison and Verna
Crawford helped Edna McLellan
and Neil Hatt with the card party on
Friday night.
Winners of the share-the-wealth
were Isabelle Craig and Eluned
McNair. The high lady was Myrna
Burnett and Allan Edgar was high
man. Not so lucky with a pink card
was Isabelle Craig and with a white
card Jeanne Ireland. The travelling
lone hand was won by Leota
Thompson. The most lone hands for
a lady was Leota Thompson, and
tied for the men were John Subject
and Bob Bremner.
Tally winners were Neil Hatt, Iola
Subject, Viola Adams, Ross
Stephenson, Helen Dobson, Keith
Turnbull, Verna Crawford, Margaret
Peebles, Alda Worden, Eluned
McNair, and Lloyd Weber.
The Brussels U-15 team recently
travelled to Newton in North Perth
Soccer League action. Controlling
the play for most of the game, the
Brussels squad came out with a
convincing two - 0 win.
The first marker came at the 10-
minute mark after Trevor McArter
put an excellent bail forward for
striker Greg Tiffin to put the locals
on the scoreboard. The second goal
came midway through the first half
after some close in play resulted in
Scott Somer.Ville putting the ball by
the Newton keeper.
The second half was highlighted
by the excellent defensive play of
the Brussels team, in particular by
midfielder Laurie Grobbink.
Ea-rning his second shutout of the
year was keeper Chris Corbett.
The win in Newton gives the
Brussels U- 15 team a record of one
win, one tie and no losses after
playing a nil - nil match with
Drayton the week before.
The U-15s recently hosted
Howick in North Perth Soccer
League action at the Brussels
community soccer fields. The recent
rains paused long enough allowing
them to get their game in but the wet
field conditions were less than

Thomas Baker started a short
course towards being a farm
mechanic at Fanshawe College,
London the first day of May. He is
sponsored by Midwestern
Equipment Ltd., Listowel and will
be returning to work there.
We woke up to masses of water
on Sunday morning, which
eventually will leave on its own.
John and Nancy Vanass, now of
Mitchell, were not so lucky. Their
buildings are intact, but only nine
of their 22 trees are left and
neighbours' belongings such as a
sheet of plywood cover their yard.
Another former Cranbrook-area
resident, Brad Knight from another
area of Mitthell reported not even
leaves on his street. Yvonne
Knight's sister Geraldine Siemon
was home but had to learn about the
tornado when her daughter called
from Barrie to see if she had any
damage.

desirable.
Brussels started the game strong
controlling the play for most of the
first half. Somerville opened the
scoring for the locals at the five-
minute mark and added another at
the eight-minute mark giving
Brussels the early lead. Tiffin gave
the Brussels team a 3-0 lead after a
fine passing play allowed him to put
one past the Howick keeper.
McArter added to the lead before
half time with a powerful shot
sailing over the keeper into the top
right corner.
U-6
teams
play
On May 19, the Brussels U-6
Brussels teams I and II played a great
soccer game and had a lot of fun at
the same time.
In the end, Brussels I was
victorious with an 8-1 win over
Brussels 11.
Tyler Cronin scored the only goal.
A good effort was put in by
Brussels II goaltenders Austin
Johnston, Shaelynn Cloakey, Micah
Kepfer, Conner denDekker and
Jessica Johnston.
No game results were submitted
for Brussels team I.
Having a commanding 4-0 lead
going into the second half allowed
Brussels to concentrate on
improving their passing and play
making skills. Many fine scoring
opportunities came nearly to fruition
only to be foiled by the excellent
play of the Howick keeper. The
combination of Lindsay Watson, and
Tiffin working the ball down the left
line proved to be extremely effective
and allowed Somerville to complete
his hat trick. Howick forward, Curtis
Harding did manage tip get the
visitors on the scoreboard after
scoring on a penalty shot putting it
by Brussels' keeper Chelsey
McLellan.
The locals finished the game,
defending their 5-1 lead with the
excellent defensive play of
Grobbink and Ang Sand.
The win against Howick improves
the Brussels U-l5 record to two
wins, one tie and zero losses.
They travel to Listowel next week
hoping to keep their unbeaten streak
intact.
