Thunder strikes
for 2 victories
The Blyth Thunder soccer team
played its second game Of the
season, on Tuesday, May 11.
Thunder hosted the game at the
Sparling field against the Goderich
Lions. Game captain was Tanner
Merner. Goderich came on strong
and managed to take the lead getting
the ball past Blyth's goalkeeper
Greg Roetcisoender, for the first
goal.
Blyth was determined to play the
game well, and knew that they had
to work hard to tie up the game.
Micah Nonkes took the ball down
the field with a nice pass to Brendon
Boven who scored Blyth's first goal
of the night. Before long Boven
made a pass to Jacob Nonkes who
passed to Brent Drost for Blyth's
second goal. At the._ end of the first
half of the game Blyth was in the
lead with a score of 2- 1.
The play- was in both ends during
the second half of the game.
Courtney Bos. made a nice pass to
Drost who scored for Blyth, making
the score 3 - I, in • Blyth's favour.
The fate of the Goderich Lions was
yet to he established as they scored
their second goal.
The Thunder kept up their effort
as well. Marijke Oudshoorn passed •
the ball to Brent Drost who scored
the final goal of the game. The final
score was Blyth Thunder, four and
Goderich Lions, two.
Coach Mary Ann Drost said "the
win for Blyth can be attributed to the
fine playing of Blyth's halfbacks:
Jacob Nonkes, Alex Raynard,
Katelyn Packer, Jolande Oudshoorn
and Brooke Bouman. The half-backs
did a fantastic job of sweeping the
hall out of our defensive end and
passing it to the forwards. Blyth's
entire team played well to
accomplish a win against our very
worthy opponents."
The third game of the season was
played in Goderich at the high
school track against the Goderich
Legion on Tuesday, May 18 at 7:15
p.m. Game captain was Bos.
Goderich was quick to score the
first goal of the game. Bos passed
the ball to forward Drost for a goal
to tie up the game. Merner took a
long ghot towards the Goderich net,
but it hit the goalpost, so
unfortunately the goal didn't count.
The second goal of the first half of
the game happened when Drost
intercepted a Goderich pass and
made his way through the Goderich
defence to score a goal.
Roetcisoender was Blyth
goaltender for the first half of the
game.
Blyth was first to score in the
second half of the game. Jason
Young, passed the ball to Drost who
closed in toward Goderich's net.
Drost made a clean pass to Brendon
Boven who scored. Goderich then
scored by making a good shot on
Blyth's first-time goaltender
Merner, getting the ball in the top
corner of the net. A few minutes
later, Drost scored another goal for
Blyth. Goderich Legion did not give
up however, and scored again.
In the last few minutes of the
game, Blyth's halfback Alex
Raynard made a long pass to
forward Marjike Oudshoorn.
Oudshoorn dribbled the ball toward
Goderich's net and scored for the
final goal of the game, giving Blyth
a 5-3 victory.
All Blyth players were playing
their positions and working hard for
their team, said coach, Mary Ann
Drost.
