THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, MAY 27, 2004. Sports New faces on Mt ets line-up tadg • The Brussels Midgets are up and swinging for another season. This year sees many new faces in the line-up. Coaches are Sandra Josling and Jason Fear. Team members include Katie Aitchison, Jenna Fischer, Catrina Josling, Sara McDonald, Lacey McCall, Cathrine Cameron, Candice Ross, Amy Bishop. Mary Aitchison. Rachel Speers, Melissa Souch, Candice McLellan, Ashley Keffer and Shannon Stennick. The Brussels season opener was against Listowel on May 17. Starting on the mound for Brussels was Ross. Listowel would score fi ve runs on three hits and four walks. Brussels would score a single run on hits by Fischer and Cameron leaving the bases loaded. In the second inning Josling was on the mound. Listowel would score seven runs on four hits and four walks. Brussels added another run to their score on a triple by Ross and a sacrifice by Bishop. Brussels would leave the bases loaded again. The third had Mcdonald on the mound. Listowel would score an seven runs on six hits and three walks. Brussels would add another run to their score on a lead- off walk by Stennick and a hit by Josling. Listowel would add four more runs in the final inning on two hits and two walks. The final score was Listowel 23, Brussels 3. Brussels was on the road on May 19 to play Hibbert. At bat in the first McLellan waited out a walk and advanced to third on a double by Cameron. No runners would cross the plate: Ross started on the mound. Two Hibbert batters would get on base by hit pitches and three would cross the plate on one hit, two errors and two walks. Brussels fought back in the top of the second. McCall led off with a single. Aitchison and Speers waited out walks to load the bases. Singles by Bishop, Ross, Stennick, M. Aitchison and McLellan would see five Brussels runners cross the plate. McDonald took over duties on the mound. Hibbert would score four runs on three hits, three errors and four walks. Brussels wouldn't add any runs for the next two innings leaving bases loaded each time. Hibbert would score three runs in the third on four hits. Hibbert's last bat saw Josling hurling from the mound for Brussels. Hibbert scored two runs on two hits and three walks. Brussels was down by seven for their last bat. Souch led off with a single and advanced on a single by McLellan. Four runs would cross the plate coming up short of the tie. The final score was Hibbert 12, Brussels 9. The next home game is May 31 at 9 p.m. against Milverton. Bowling club plans for season Sah-wing batter Oops! This Londesborough Co-ed slowpitch team member just misses this one. The game was played on Thursday evening. (Vicky Bremner photo) Thunder strikes for 2 victories The Blyth Thunder soccer team played its second game Of the season, on Tuesday, May 11. Thunder hosted the game at the Sparling field against the Goderich Lions. Game captain was Tanner Merner. Goderich came on strong and managed to take the lead getting the ball past Blyth's goalkeeper Greg Roetcisoender, for the first goal. Blyth was determined to play the game well, and knew that they had to work hard to tie up the game. Micah Nonkes took the ball down the field with a nice pass to Brendon Boven who scored Blyth's first goal of the night. Before long Boven made a pass to Jacob Nonkes who passed to Brent Drost for Blyth's second goal. At the._ end of the first half of the game Blyth was in the lead with a score of 2- 1. The play- was in both ends during the second half of the game. Courtney Bos. made a nice pass to Drost who scored for Blyth, making the score 3 - I, in • Blyth's favour. The fate of the Goderich Lions was yet to he established as they scored their second goal. The Thunder kept up their effort as well. Marijke Oudshoorn passed • the ball to Brent Drost who scored the final goal of the game. The final score was Blyth Thunder, four and Goderich Lions, two. Coach Mary Ann Drost said "the win for Blyth can be attributed to the fine playing of Blyth's halfbacks: Jacob Nonkes, Alex Raynard, Katelyn Packer, Jolande Oudshoorn and Brooke Bouman. The half-backs did a fantastic job of sweeping the hall out of our defensive end and passing it to the forwards. Blyth's entire team played well to accomplish a win against our very worthy opponents." The third game of the season was played in Goderich at the high school track against the Goderich Legion on Tuesday, May 18 at 7:15 p.m. Game captain was Bos. Goderich was quick to score the first goal of the game. Bos passed the ball to forward Drost for a goal to tie up the game. Merner took a long ghot towards the Goderich net, but it hit the goalpost, so unfortunately the goal didn't count. The second goal of the first half of the game happened when Drost intercepted a Goderich pass and made his way through the Goderich defence to score a goal. Roetcisoender was Blyth goaltender for the first half of the game. Blyth was first to score in the second half of the game. Jason Young, passed the ball to Drost who closed in toward Goderich's net. Drost made a clean pass to Brendon Boven who scored. Goderich then scored by making a good shot on Blyth's first-time goaltender Merner, getting the ball in the top corner of the net. A few minutes later, Drost scored another goal for Blyth. Goderich Legion did not give up however, and scored again. In the last few minutes of the game, Blyth's halfback Alex Raynard made a long pass to forward Marjike Oudshoorn. Oudshoorn dribbled the ball toward Goderich's net and scored for the final goal of the game, giving Blyth a 5-3 victory. All Blyth players were playing their positions and working hard for their team, said coach, Mary Ann Drost. The Brussels Lawn Bowling club held its spring organizational meeting at the clubhouse Thursday. May 20. Jean Bewley read the minutes of the fall meeting and gave the treasurer's report. Tykes play The Blyth Tyke A team played its season opening game Thursday, May 20 against Seaforth B. They played an excellent game but in the last inning Seaforth got ahead leaving the final score 20-14. In the second inning Amy Badley made an awesome hit bringing in three runs. Cory Ducharme raced to home plate making an incredible slide to get the batter out. The next game is in Stanley on May 3.7 at 7 p.m. to see lots more action. Yvonne Knight and Mrs. Bewley reported on the District Meeting held in Mitchell. Some new regulations were announced including a $3 increase in Canada Bowls fees. Atwood Bowling Club has disbanded and intends to sell its equipment at auction. Grand Cove Estates has formed a new club and will be included in this district. All clubs are looking for new members. Reasons for declining membership were discus-sect. Many people haye the idea that you have to old and wear white which is not so. 'Others think they must attend every week. Spares are not necessary as teams are chosen each evening or afternoon. • Lawn bowling is billed as the sport for all ages, from nine to 90. The Brussels Club discussed ways of increasing interest in bowling. Ken Barbour moved that members invite the Lions Club, Optimists and Legion to special evenings to try out the sport.
