The Avon Maitland District
School Board has begun another
search for a top-level administrator.

Marjatta Longston accepted the top
job at a school board on British
Columbia's lower mainland.
"We are very please for Marjatta,
but it will be a sad time for us." said
North Huron trustee Colleen
Schenk. announcing Longston's
resignation during a regular
meeting. Tuesday, May II. "We'd
like to offer our sincere
congratulations and wish you the
best of luck."
In an interview, Longston
explained she received a call from a
corporate "head-hunter." working
on behalf of School District 42
IMaple Ridge — Pitt Meadows) in
southwestern BC. She later travelled
to the area. just cast of Vancouver,
for an interview.

attended the 75th birthday party for
Isabelle Gray. She is Alvin's aunt.
It was very nice to see relatives
we don't see very often, usually just
at family occasions such as
this.
Then in the evening we went into
the BMG Community Centre for the
first karaoke night. For all of you
who missed it, the evening was very
entertaining. We did not know that
there were so many very talented
singers in the area.
Of course there were a couple who
should not give up their day jobs,
but they deserve an A for effort.
I hope everyone has a safe and
happy long weekend and that the
weather co-operates.

There were also many lucky tally
prizes.
The next euchre will be held
on Monday. May 24 at 8
p.m.
Longston welcomed the challenge
presented in running a school board,
as well as the prospect of moving to
an area known for its natural beauty.
Longston's new job begins Aug. I,
2004, and she'll be done at the Avon
Maitland board — where her
specific responsibilities were
curriculum and assessment — on
June 30.
"She has provided some
tremendous leadership in all kinds
of areas within the board," explained
chair Meg Westley. "But she has
also built up an exceptionally strong
team and 1 have great faith they can
follow in her footsteps."
Last year, director of education
Lorne Rachlis and education
superintendent Bill Gerth both left
the Avon Maitland board to take
over as top directors in Ottawa and
Waterloo, respectively. The board
also had to find a replacement for
former education superintendent
Geoff Williams, who was chosen to
replace Rachlis.

Cranbrook Presbyterian WMS
meeting for May was held at the
home of Donna Knight.
Brenda Perrie, leader, opened the
meeting with a verse about mother.
The scripture reading John 15: 7-17
was read in unison and the hymn
Happy The Home When God is
There was read in unison.
Mrs. Perrie gave readings When
God Created Mothers, and When
God Created Fathers.
Father Lead Me Day By Day 's as
read in unison.
Eleanor Stevenson read the
minutes of the April meeting and
Mrs. Knight gave the treasurer's
report.
The next meeting will be Sept. 14
at Mrs. Stevenson's home at 7:30
p.m.
The roll call was answered with a
verse about mother.
Mrs. Stevenson read an article
from the Presbyterian Record about
the •Foodgrains Bank work in
Ethiopia.
Lunch was served by Mrs. Knight.
Members of the Cranbrook WMS
and family attended the Monkton
WMS Thankoffering and salad
supper on Sunday afternoon. Those
taking part in the service were Rev.
Theresa McDonald-Lee, Elizabeth
Stewart. Jean Peebles, Helen Henry,
Sally Scott, and Shirley Bannerman.
The guest speaker was Stephanie
McDonald who showed pictures of
her recent Canadian Foodgrains
Bank, youth tour to Nicaragua and
Honduras. Providing special music
were Tanya, Kayla, Cameron and
Danielle Stewart and Michelle
Bontaine.

People
A number of area residents
attended the surprise birthday part
at the Legion on Saturday night for
Kathy Bridge.
The Huron East District Women's
Institute annual meeting was held in
Melville Presbyterian Church on
Wednesday, May 12 with area
members present. Lucy Hesse from
the Majestic Institute in Brussels is
president and chaired for the
meeting. Kathy Bridge from
Majestic WI will be secretary-
treasurer next year.
The United Church garden party
dinner at the Brussels arena on
Sunday night was enjoyed by many
from the area.
Thanks to the people in the
Moncrieff, Henfryn and Cranbrook
area, $1,692 was collected for the
Cancer Society. Collecting were
Jenny Gorter, Terry Rice, Marion
Harrison, Karen Uhler, Sharon
Evans, Yvonne Knight, Susan Cox,
Tracy Swart, Diane Diehl, Eleanor
Stevenson and Stewart Steiss.
