After working together in a local
retail shop for a number of years, a
mother-daughter team have opened a
new clothing store in Blyth offering
more than just clothes.
Mary Lou Stewart and her
daughter Bonnie, 20. both of Blyth.
have opened Mary Lou's
Consignments on Queen Street,
offering a wide selection of clothing
for women, men, youth and children
as well as a -variety of houseware
items.
"We have really nice sellable wear.
Some are consignments and some
are reduced pieces. but there are a lot
of new and nice articles." said
Stewart.
Although the grand opening of
Mary Lou's Consignments isn't until
June 10, I 1 and 12, she said she will
be having sidewalk sales until the. big
day.
She said the majority of the
clothing Articles came from the
former Hughes' Ready-to-Wear store
in Teeswater, which closed after 65
years of business:
She said the owner's son saw an ad
in the local paper advertising for
consignment ciothing and responded
to it.
All of the mannequins and
clothing lineS from Hughes' Ready
to-Wear store were sent to Stewart's
store and she was thrilled to get
them.
"I -think it's really unique having
these mannequins in the store. It
;helps to get a better look at the
items." she said.
Stewart said she really enjoyed her
10 years of retail experience at a
local clothing store, "so the interest

was always there:"
She said she has thought about
opening her own clothing business
for the past year.
"I had this idea and it was the right
timing and the opportunity was
there. I also wanted to help the
downtown merchants of Blyth," said
Stewart.
With all the encouragement from
friends and family, she said making
the decision to open was a little
easier.
"I thought, if I'm going to do this,
then I'm going to do it-now and.if
others think I can, then I can." she
said.
One of her favourite things to do
with Bonnie is to check out
consignment stores and deals in
other areas to get an idea of what to
offer.
"We'll be honest, we love
shopping. It's a fun pasttime," said
Bonnie.
She said consignment stores "seem
to be the trend these days because
everywhere seems to have one."
Some of the gift items sold in
Mary Lou's ConSignments came
from a friend. whose store was also
going out of business. Some items
include Precious Moments figurines
and photo albums.
Like her mother. Bonnie has
