Architect's deck design a perfect fit
Right at home
Duncan and Lynda McGregor have found tremendous
enjoyment from the deck and pergola created for them by
friend, architect John Rutledge. The structure offers a level
of privacy without shutting them away, allowing them a view
of the street as well as their lovely gardens. Construction
was completed in time for Thanksgiving dinner, 2002.

truck had rolled down the slope of
their yard, causing "mortal damage"
to the deck.
Though they had originally
considered replacing it with the re-
creation of a gingerbreak side porch,
it was during a get-together with
friend, architect John Rutledge that
some new ideas were explored.
"We started off with the usual
things, no real imagination at all,"
said Duncan.
Originally Rutledge had thought
of putting the deck behind the house
to provide a view of Lynda's
beautiful terraced flowerbeds. "I
believe he was sort of feeding off
me," said Duncan.
Lynda explains, "It is an
interesting process working with an
architect, very creative. He was
trying to discern all sorts of things
from us - how we live, what was
important to us."
What was discoveredowas that
they did want an area offering some
privacy, that a view of the terraces
was important and that Duncan
learned he likes to watch the activity
on the street. "When we were
without a deck we spent our time on
the lawn and it was so nice to visit
with people passing by. We wanted
to see them and invite them to come
sit with us on the deck," said Lynda.
Progress was not always smooth.
Duncan admits that he felt Rutledge
began to get a little impatient with
the couple. "He was going back to
the worst possible configuration
because we were not being creative
enough."
Though the McGregors had
always had great respect for
Rutledge's work, it only increased
after he began to put his ideas to
paper. "John went back and started
to draw. He's tremendously creative,
a genius," said Lynda.
Stating that Rutledge is one of a
few architects who does not use
computer-assisted design, Lynda

When Duncan and Lynda
McGregor began contemplating a
new outdoor living space for their
stately Victorian home it was
important that it be something that
didn't just meet their needs but their
aesthetic sense as well.
"We embrance being outside for
five months of the year so it's
important to have something
aesthetically pleasing to us," said
Lynda.
"It's not so much that we want to
be different," explained Duncan.
"You can look around and see any
number of unique and beautiful
decks. But we wanted a style for us,"
"And knew we wanted it large,"
added Lynda, pointing .out their love
for entertaining.
While a change for their tired
existing deck began several years
ago, the conversation took on new
life in a rather unlikely way. Duncan
returned home from work one day to
find the street in front of their home
crowded with emergency vehicles. A
