Turf wars: Strike a compromise with your pet .
Getting along
It is possible for both you and your pet to enjoy your lawn.

Sure you love your beloved dog attracted to such plants.
Buddy and cat Muffy. You want your DOGS ,
pets to be able to run, jump-and play Dogs are often caught- between a
freely about the yard.
But you don't want them ruining
your lawn when they "do their
business." It is possible for both of
you to cohabitate freely and enjoy
your yard in the process. Here are
some tips, courtesy of Home and
Garden Television and the Purdue
University Veterinary Teaching
Hospital Wellness Clinic.
CATS
One of the best ways to deter cats
from using your yard as a litter box
is to make it uncomfortable
anywhere you don't want them.
Conversely, make it as comfortable
as possible where you would like
them to litter.
For example, cover cat-prone
backyard areas with pine cones,
sweetgum balls, chestnut husks,
rosebush or bramble clippings or
other material. Cats also like to dig
and kick away soil to create the
perfect spot. Deter this by spacing
plants closely. If plants aren't mature
yet. lay chicken wire on top of them
— a sensation your cat will not like
underfoot.
If your cat spends time indoors
and outdoors, but is relegated to
using an indoor litter box, make that
litter box continually inviting. Keep
the box clean and free of waste at all
times so your finicky cats won't
decide to look for new places to
relieve themselves ... namely on
your favourite plants.
You can also create a cat haven in
your yard by planting them their
own garden. It can include plants
like catmint and catnip. Remember,
however, that not all cats will be
Beautify deck
(MS) — Winter can be hard on a
deck. No matter how beautiful
yours looked last spring, it's
probably dirty, mildew-stained and
wearing a coat of grey after
enduring the long, wet winter.
But don't dismay. It's easy to
transform-your deck from dingy to
beautiful in two easy steps. Here's
some advice from the deck experts:
Step I: Clean and Restore: Before
you apply a protective finish or
color, dirt and gray weathered wood
should be cleaned with an acid-free,
biodegradable deck cleaner.
Step 2: Beautify and Protect:
Once you've cleaned and prepared
the deck surface, add colour and
protection in one easy step by
applying a wood stain that offers
superior durability, colour longevity
and maximum protection against all
weather and climate conditions.
rock and a hard place. They are not
allowed to relieve themselves
indoors, and often must settle on
restricted areas to take care of
business. Lawn-lovers do not want
to forgo their attractive lawn for one
with brown spots. However, there
are ways to make do.
To remedy the problem. it helps if
you understand why brown, burnt
spots happen. The fundamental
problem with the presence of urine
Or feces on a lawn relates to the
nitrogen content and concentration
of these waste products. Dogs and
cats are both carnivores, and there is
an, abundance of nitrogen that must
be removed from the animals' bodies
because of their high-protein diet.
Unfortunately, nitrogen can damage
even the most tolerant lawns.
Urine poses the greatest threat
because its nitrogen is so
concentrated. Female dogs or males
who "squill" are often the culprits of
the most damage because the urine
