Search for family enterprise leads to nursery
A family enterprise
Ron and Jacqueline Knop, with children Dennis and Bianca
are the new owners of Maitland Manor Nursery. The couple,
who purchased the property in December of 2002 have
been busy putting their own stamp on the business. (Bonnie
Gropp photo)
Ron then began talking about
heifers, so they made the trip in the
summer of 2002 to see what was
here. He was excited, but Jacqueline
was not sure. She sent him and their
children, Dennis. now nine and
Bianca. five, back home and she
remained for another week to learn.
"I couldn't see where I would fit in
this type of business."
Her brother, who owns a
greenhouse outside Listowel,
mentioned there was one for sale near
Bluevale. "So on my last day here
before packing, we drove out. And on
the long trip home in the plane I
realized that while this was not what
we had been looking for it was
actually exactly what we'd been
looking for."
Taking over Maitland Manor
Nursery would give the couple the
chance to work together on their own
property in the country. As well, Ron
.was already educated having studied
horticulture at school. Both he and
Jacqueline had worked for a grower
in their homeland.
With the closing date in December,
the Knops had little to do initially but
get themselves settled into the house.
Once the weather warmed, however,
they began-putting their stamp on the
nursery. "It needed a lot of cleaning
out. The good ideas were laid out, but
basically we were starting over." said
Ron.
The laneway has been enlarged,
providing better parking. They have
added mulch and rockery to their
inventory and more signage. "This
seems to be appealing to people,"
said Jacqueline of the latter.
As well every single item is clearly
marked with a price tag.
One of the first really large projects
was the removal of an old barn. This
is to be the site of a new greenhouse
which will allow the Knops to
increase the number of annual plants
they offer for sale. The big goal,
however is that "over the years we
hope to have the finest collection in
trees, shrubs and perennials," said
Ron.
In 2003 the couple added
landscaping to the business. "It's just
the two of us so we don't have the
manpower or equipment to handle
bigger jobs, but we did do several
smaller landscaping projects last
year," said Jacqueline.
Maitland Manor Nursery is open
from mid-April until November.

Things took an interesting turn
when in search of a new opportunity
and new life Jacqueline and Ron
Knop made the decision to come to
Canada. from The Netherlands.
Jacqueline's parents and five
brothers already lived here. "I was
the last and we had wanted to for a
couple of years before we did."
lnitally, the Knops had discussed
starting a poultry operation, but
opportunties were missed and when
the prices rose. they realized they
couldn't afford to move into that type
of farming.
