A CHRISTMAS SUGGESTION In our advertising columns l;o.day there appears an appeal which should go straight to the heart and conscience of every Canadian, It is made by the Oanedian Patriotic Fund on behalf of the families of our soldiers, and it non. Naturally the lees give to those who ere not in actual need the more we will have to give to ehoee who are. Arid it is only these who are :resisted by the Fund, Of these families of the men who enlisted in Canadian armies, but two out of three receive help from the Fund. The aim of this great patriotic organization is to supplement the Government grant and the soldiers' pay such eum as will maintain the families he reacionabie comfort. To accomplish this the enormous sum of fourteen million dollars will have to be raised in 1017, and of this Ontario is being asked to contribute eix millions. To comply with the request means sacrifices but certainly none to compare with those made by the women who have sent their husbands to face the German bullets. A greet improvement in Method of Fscdinir Pi;ls Mr, 1:Ienry Smith f Lietowel, has just patented in Canada and the United Btatee, an invention that will. particulurty interest farmers engaged is raising hogs. It. is the $tnithautornatio hog.feeder. is a simple devise, consisting of a drum, mounted on suitably bearings which permit easy attachment to a wall, and on the eivilumference of whiob, are holes from which the feed falls as the bogs engage the feeder with their snouts. The object of Mr, Smith's invention is to devise a ehnpie means for con. trolling the amount of feed, given to the animal, so as to prevent its eating faster than desired, eliminating any clanger of gorging and insuring that the animal is kept on its feet a suffic- ient length of time to give it the nec- essary exercise, while obtaining food to satisfy its hunger. It is well known, particularly with hogs, that when feeding, they eat too fast and in a short space of time are satisfied, and then lie around until the food is digested. Iu this way they get practically no exercise at all. By this invention the feed of grain can be so controlled that the pigs get only a small quantity of feed at a time, the boles in the drum being made smaller as desired. This increases the amount of exercise—especially impor- tant to young and growing pigs. The construction of the instrument caters to the natural instincts of the hog to root, emaIi wooden eluate being placed at regular intervals on the cir- cumference of the drum, permitting ite being turned by the hog with com- parative ease. Besides providing the exercise that eliminates crippling and being a sav- ing and sanitary method of feeding, Mr. Smith claims for his invention, that it makes the hogs grow faster, that they require less food per pound, gain in weight and are lees subject to disease on account of greater activity. Emphasis is laid on the importance of the invention by the fact that it is the outcome of over forty years of ex- perience by Mr. Smith in the raising of hogs, during which period be made a study of improved methods in feed- ing; and he points out that though he has }tad considerable succeee, bringing into .Listowel in years gone by, as many as fifty porkers at a time, aver. aging two hundred pounds, he has never had them do so well as the few he is just finishing now after raising them on the feeder. Extensive plans for the marketing of the invention are not yet completed, though Mr. Smith has already been able to fill a number of orders and will no doubt promptly take care of the immediate local demand, ' Because of its many worthy pinta and being moierately priced, ite gen. eral adoption by hog raisers, is antic- ipated by the inventor. sepeene ark';ae e.. r.• EZ A:BILIZ:HEl7= toward independence is a Saving Account in the Bank of Hamil- ton. A LIVELY BATTLE, The following letter is from Lieut. Kenneth Weaver, who belonged to the 53rd Battalion and is now with the machine gun company of the 10th Oanadians, and was kindly handed to TSD ADVANCE by Mrs, Weaver, who is visiting at the home of her father Mr. Hughes, near the 'Junction, "I have just come out of my first big fight and It was certainly a won- derfuI and awe-inspiring eight.- We advanced about six hundred yards along out wliole brigade front, cap. tiered two trenches and over 500 prie- onere. It was funny to see those poor devils of Germans jump out of their trenches with their hands up as soon as our lade got close to ,them -they simply cannot stand up against us when we get near them and our artill- ery and machine gun fire was terrible, We put up practically a solid curtain of fire in front of our troops to protect them. Just to give you an idea of what it was like, you have heard a blizzard blowing around the corner of a building, well it sounded exactly like that only much stronger with the whistling of shells and bullets 'and of course the roar of the guns and rattle of machine guns and I ehould think there were easily fifty aeroplanes overhead watching the fight and sig- nalling back to the .artillery.
