THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, APRIL 29, 2004. PAGE 21
Melville Guild, WNIS lead Sunday service
Mary Huether and Betty Shaw
were the greeters at Melville
Presbyterian Church last Sunday
morning. As it was Mission
Awareness Sunday, the entire
service was presented by . the
Melville Guild and Women's
Missionary Society.
Rev. Cathrine Campbell was
attending the PreSbyterian Church of
Canada's Clerk's Conference in
Toronto from April 23 - 27.
Janna Dodds led the congregation
in the Call to Worship, then
accompanied by organist Crystal
McLellan. the hymn, Stand Up and
Bless the Lord. was sung. A piano
solo entitled The Spider Dance was
contributed, by Eliza Dodds while
the congregation exchanged
welcomes.
After the children's hymn, Jesus
Bids Us Shine, Sunday school
superintendent Elaine Armstrong
moved to the front with the children.
She held up a map of the world so
they could see how far it is from
Canada to India, and she told them
the story of two Canadian
missionary doctors, John and Mary
Buchanan, who had met and married
while pursuing their common
mission in India. They went to help
the people of a Hill tribe, who
suffered extreme poverty and
disease, and did not know of Jesus's
coming.
Mrs. Armstrong told about the
school and hospital they'd built
there, and how every Sunday
morning when the bell rang, the
people of the community moved
down the path toward the church,
loudly announcing in their own
language "Jesus Christ reigns".
Mrs. Armstrong told the children
that they too contribute to
missionary work, as their Easter
breakfast earned $500 this year to
support their sponsored child in
South Africa. Also through their
Shoebox Project they send needed
items to people all over the world
once each year.
Finally Mrs. Armstrong referred
back to the children's hymn and
said, " When Jesus bids us shine, it is
in that we should shine through
helping others."
Mrs. Dodds read Psalm 145: 1 -
13. The scripture lesson was Isaiah
6: 1 - 8 read by Leona Armstrong.
Acts 8: 1 - 8, 26 - 40 was read by
Mrs. Dodds.
The sermon entitled Whom Shall I
Send was written by Ann and
Charles Taylor and presented by
Julia Mitchell. Mrs. Mitchell first
talked of the gift of giving, and that
people can give many things
including a smile, a kind word,
appreciation, time, hope, happiness
and encouragement, and that the
amount that you give determines the
amount that you have as all things
are returned to you.
Mrs. Mitchell referred to Isaiah's
recruitment by God and how a
seraph placed a live coal from the
altar on his lips to cleanse him. His
response to God was, "Here am I.
Send me". This is the commission to
the faithful who see a need and turn
to God, are overwhelmed by their
unworthiness, then are cleansed by
God and sent forth to do good. she
said.
Just as an angel sent Philip down a
wilderness road toward Gaza where
he encountered and converted a
eunuch, men and women today
respond to God's call and go into the
mission field td help others. And not
just in far away countries either, as
Mrs. Mitchell told us of several
missionaries active in the Toronto
area.
Mrs. Dodds contributed
information about the Out of the
Cold Program in Toronto that
originated from St. Andrews
Presbyterian Church and serves as a
model for others in that city and in
other towns across Canada. Their
mission statement is that the poor
must be fed and cared for in a loving
way, and with 200 volunteers and an
annual budget of $50,000 they help
thousands by providing hot meals, a
bed and medical attention to the
homeless and disadvantaged in
Toronto.
Collection was taken up by
Leanne Armstrong, Bill Aitchison
and Brian Armstrong.
Next Sunday is Earth Day. There
will be a special service to reflect
this.
The 150th anniversary committee
will meet May 4.
Melville Moments ... by Gerald
Gibson
The Moderator, Rev. Mann, called
a meeting on March 19, 1918 to
discuss Mr. Mulhero6's (organist)
resignation. After a thorough
discussion of the matter, the
resignation was accepted and that he
be paid the rate of $350 per original
contract or otherwise remain until
the end of his year ending Oct. 1 at
$500.
Mr. Mulheron, seated first, he
accepted the conditions of the
resolution presented to him, and then
he subsequently gave notice that he
decided not to accept it.
The board and session then called
upon Solicitor Vanstone of
Wingham for advice on the matter.
Later a telegram was received from
Mr. Vanstone which stated that they
would be quite safe to pay the choir
leader to the end of the present
quarter and then to dismiss him at
once. A notice of motion was given
by D. C. Ross and Alex Stewart that
they move to rescind the former
resolution regarding Mr. Mulheron's
resignation.
Parish nurse guest speaker at Diabetic Group meeting
The Brussels, Morris and Grey
diabetic meeting was held at
Huronlea, Brussels on April 21 with
12 members present.
Guest speaker was Janna Dodds.
parish nurse at Melville Presbyterian
Church. She holds certificates in
natural health care, reflexology, ear
candling and recently became a
chartered herbalist.
Mrs. Dodds spoke to the group
about natural supplements and
dietary ways to lower the release of
glucose into the bloodstream. She
also covered lifestyle changes
and how stress can play a factor
in keeping blood sugar ba-
lanced.
Her comments included, "If God
didn't make it, don't eat it." She
covered many supplements and
distributed handouts on diet,
supplements and herbal remedies, as
well as glycemic index chart and a
comparison of sugar sub-
stitutes.
Mrs. Dodds pointed out that most
people do not eat enough-vegetables
and fruit. She suggested eating more
of the free vegetables and fruits and
vegetables from the lower end of the
glycemic index.
She closed with an overhead
graphic and humorous slide
presentation.
Members also noted that any
changes to their diets or supplements
should be checked out with their
diabetic professional.
The minutes of the last meeting
were read and approved.
Nelva Scott asked those who
attended the Diabetic Education Day
in Stratford how they enjoyed the
day.
The last meeting of the spring
season will be May 19 with Dr. S.
Edwards as speaker.
A brief directors' meeting
followed where the fall meetings
and speakers were discussed. As
well, it was pointed out that
nominations for directors for the
2004-05 year would have to be
brought forward at the September
meeting.
