The life and times of a clergy dog
By Rev. Cathrine Campbell
Melville, Brussels, Knox Belgrave
Presbyterian Churches
As many of you know, I had a
wonderful dog. Hector, black and
white, who took me on a daily walk
and introduced me to many fine folk
in Brussels. Sadly, time and severe
arthritis took their toll and Hector
died on Dec. I. 2003.
Time passed. I missed Hector very
much, his dignified demeanour and
uhis interest in food, cats and people.
Spring came and I decided to get a
new dog.
And today, I have a new dog,
Magnus - six years old, brown and
white, a rescue (Let me recommend
Lucknow Pet Rescue, even though
Magnus came from Orangeville. I
would not have found him without
the Lucknow site. Just put Lucknow
Pet Rescue in your Google). and in
many ways looking like a brown
Hector. However, Magnus has his
own personality and his own views
of life and I hope that we will have a
long time together and that it will he
a good thing for Magnus.
The clergy dog is not that
uncommon and my former principal
at Knox College. Dr. Don Corbett.
wrote the following article on such
dogs. . Dr. Corbett had a series of
beautiftil black Labradors one " of
whom, he said. could distinguish a
person's politics and would react
accordingly to those who did not
share his master's political views.
This is an excerpt from an article
written in the Presbyterian Record
approximately 20 years ago:
The Clergy Dog in Crisis
"Clergy dogs have many special
problems. These begin with the
clergy puppy. Most dogs have
merely to be housebroken in their
early weeks. Not so with clergy
puppies. They have to become
"manse broken". "Parsonage
broken" "rectory broken" or even
"presbytery-broken". This process is
tar more traumatic than we humans
imagine. You will begin to grasp its
meaning when you realize that it is
somewhat akin to the problem of a
corgi becoming "palace broken".
Remember too that clergy dogs are
subjected to a more rigorous training
than ordinary dogs. For most dogs
the basic commands arc sit, stay,
come and quit jumping. The clergy
dog must learn all of these and much
more. Presbyterian dogs must learn
to perform decently and in order.
This is especially hard for young
puppies Anglican and Roman
Catholic clergy dogs must learn to
kneel, that is, do sit in reverse.
Charismatic clergy dogS must be
experts at rolling over (and
speaking). Clergy dogs committed to
the principles of the Church Growth
movement have : to become
proficient at shaking hands and must
he careful never to bite anyone who
might he a prospective new church
member.
Not only do clergy dogs have to
undergo special training they have
more thou shalt nots than other dogs.
They must not raid the neighbours'
garbage can or chase his cat. They
have to hack off from fights with
secular dogs. In short. they have to
reach the highest standards in order
to live up to the owner's calling. It is
tough to have to he an example all
the time.
No wonder clergy dogs are in
crisis. No wonder they sometimes
chew the furniture and bark at the
postman and sleep on the living
room chesterfield.
How can we help them ..'
Obviously clero N.. owners must spend
more time with their pets.
Do you realize the acute loneliness
that your dog endures every Sunday.
Make up for it on Monday.
It would also be helpful to
observe special occasions with your
clergy dog. Each year when he gets
his new licence and certainly when
he gets his first one - have a special
licensing ceremony, with prayer.
Scripture reading, a hymn and two
pounds of porterhouse steak. He Will
enjoy this immensely and will
appreciate your concern for his
