Lakers bring home gold from Czech Republic
The Huron Perth Major Bantam Lakers brought home the gold tram a tournament in the Czech

The Huron Perth Major Bantams
Lakers' staff and parents left Toronto
Pearson International Airport on
Monday. April 12 for a hockey
experience of a lifetime in Prague,
Czech Republic. This team has been
preparing for this trip for almost a
year.
And it paid off as they came home
with the gold. Wednesday afternoon
they had an exhibition game against
a team from Valentuna HK Sweden.
The son of Thomas Gredin, who is a
former NHL player and a current
European scout with the Vancouver
Canucks, was a player on this team.
The Lakers had some adjusting to
do with the bigger ice surface. no
red line and the different refereeing
style. They were defeated 4-1.
After a practice Thursday morning
there was another exhibition game in
the afternoon versus a team from
Slany. The team now had some idea
of what would have to be done to
win. They pulled off a 5-2 win.
Friday was the start of the Spring
Challenge Cup II tournament. The
Lakers' first game of the tournament
was-.against a team from Finland.
The team played really well and
pulled off a 15-0 win.
That afternoon they faced-off
against HC Kobra Praha from the
Czech Republic. This was a very
physical game with lots of stick
work and slew footing being done by
the Europeans. There was an
altercation at the end of this game
with players leaving the Czech

go on to the gold medal game.
The team from Austria defeated
Vaxjo Lakers from Sweden in their
semi-final and Austria would be the
local Lakers opponents for the gold
medal game. Lee Williams scored a
wrist 'shot from the point at 2:44 of.
the first period. Then at 6:49 of the
tsecond period while playing
shorthanded Kevin Weiler scored on
a slapshot from the point. Blair
Bennett, a grandson of Hebo and
Marg Siertsema of Blyth, was
defending the net and was receiving

3:05 of the third period. At 7:59

Huron-Perth Catholic District
School Board director of education
Larry Langan was one of two
recipients of a new award handed
out for the first time Thursday, April
22 in Hamilton, by a province-wide
group called the Ontario Catholic
Supervisory Officers Association.
Langan, along with a
superintendent from a Catholic
school board in Ottawa, shared the
inaugural Distinguished Leadership
Award in Catholic Education.
Huron-Perth chair Ron Marcy
informed other trustees of the award
at the board's regular meeting
Monday, April 26, noting Langan
has.now "set the bar" for subsequent
gold medal game. As all the fans
counted down from 10 the Lakers
bench cleared and started the big
celebration.

nominated by his colleagues in the

lot of people who worked very hard

were feeling confident about
adjusting to the European game.
They were going to play a select
team from Austria who had won the
tournament the last two years. This
game they lost 6-4.
After some free time in the
afternoon to tour in Prague the
Lakers travelled back to Slany for
the skills competition that evening.
Participants were Andrew Turton,
accuracy shooting, Conor Morrison,
agility skating and puck handling,
Joe Gaynor and Chris Corbett of
Brussels, penalty shots on a goalie
and relay race. Mac Potter was
goaltender for the penalty shots.
When all was said and done
Gaynor and Corbett finished first in
the relay race and the team received
a cup for finishing first in the overall
team points.
Sunday was the championship day.
The Lakers team finished second in
their pool and would face the first-
place team from the other pool
which was from the Czech Republic.
