Letter to the editor
Writer talks about what's going down drains

Huron East has opened
wide its window to the
community with the
continuing expansion of its
website.
Visitors to
www.huroneast.com , will
discover a new Community
Profile, a summary of the
recently released community
survey results, a growing
community calendar, and new
local maps on tf.e evolving
website. It also links to local
newspapers for up-to-date
news.
"This website is a living
thing, and it just keeps
growing. People from all
corners of the municipality
are posting information daily
that can be viewed by
neighbours and is being seen
by folks across the region and
around the world," said Ralph
Laviolette, business growth
and economic development
officer, Huron East. "It's like
a huge community bulletin
board with new bits of
information every time you
take a look."
A page on Seaforth
highlights the town's history,
the town's annual events and
its most .important historical
site nearby in Egmondville,
the Van Egmond House. It
joins a list of other local
profiles that include the
wards of Grey. McKillop and
Tuckersmith and the village
of Brussels, which has its
own website,
www.villageofbrussels.ca .
The community of Walton
(pop. 100) in Grey Ward also
has its own website.

the usual culprits destroying
the purity of the water table
and depleting soil quality. No,
in fact the very products that
All three sites are linked to
find information quickly and
conveniently.
The Huron East calendar is
now up and running, with
coming events listed through
to the end of June. Service
clubs, church groups,
businesses and others are
invited to fill out an on-line
submission form to include
their event in the calendar.
Submissions of events,
meetings or news will then be
posted within about 12 hours.
In the near future, the
Huron East site will include a
link to a new site dedicated to
Seaforth that is now being
constructed.
Local bed and breakfast
operators are also meeting to
shape a website that provides
the public with information
on local and area
accommodations and that will
help B&B and hotel operators
to find a room for tired
travellers if their own rooms
are booked.
"We want lOcal residents
and visitors to be aware of all
the service club and
community centre services
here (we have three, one with
an indoor pool), we want
tourists to know all we have
to offer, and we want business
and industry to be convinced
Huron East is the place to be
to attract business arid a
competent labour pool," said
Laviolette.

are producing some very
serious environmental effects.
At present, trace amounts
of pharmaceuticals and health
and beauty products can be
found in sewage products in
the water are so diluted 'that
they pose no threat to
huMans.
Pharmaceutical and
personal care products (also
referred to as PPCPs) can
reach the environment when
they are excreted from the
body after use; they are
disposed of down household
drains/toilets or by runoff
from pharmaceutical plants.,
Then passing through
conventional sewage
treatment processes, they can
percolate through layers of
soil, reaching the water
table, our lakes and rivers,
and in a few cases drinking
water.
Veterinary medications
may enter the environment
directly, or by the spreading
of manure. Some PPCP
contaminants have been
found to remain in the water
table for more than six years
after introduction.
The greatest concern
regarding the presence of
PPCPs in the environment is
the effect they have on wild
and aquatic life, especially
the effects of substances
known as endocrine
disrupters, which disturb

accredited to antidepressant
medications found in the

As long as we continue to
use pharmaceuticals, they
will continue to show up in
our external environment.
Ltickily for many ailments
there-are natural remedies and
there are several
environmentally-friendly
cosmetic lines that can be
used instead. There will
always be pharmaceuticals
present in the environment,
but everyone can make an
effort to limit their output of
harmful substances.

Beautiful paintings, hand-made quilts and woodworking were just a few items to bid on at the Maitland
