Woman, daughters greet at Melville service
Greeting at Melville Presbyterian
Church last Sunday morning were
Janna Dodds with her daughters
Eliza and Rachel. Following the Call
to Worship by Rev. Cathrine
Campbell, the congregation sang the
hymn, Praise to the Lord Almighty,
accompanied by organist Mary
Douma.
During the congregational
welcome Matthew Cardiff played
two piano selections, one of which
was extensive variations on Old
McDonald's Farm. The responsive
reading of Psalm 150 next preceded
the children's hymn, Let All Things
now Living, and the children
gathered at the front of the church
for Rev. Cathrine Campbell's
story ti me.
Referring to Psalm 150 which tells
of the many musical ways to praise
the Lord, Rev. Campbell told the
children that some are better than
others at singing, but we can still all
do something and give praise to God
in a variety of ways. Then she read
Double
celebration
at
St. John's
Anglican
Easter Sunday was a double
celebration at St. John's Anglican
this year.
There was the additional blessing
of welcoming a new member to the
Christian community. Hailey Nicole
Alcock was presented for baptism.
Rev. Tom Wilson invited all the
children present to come to the front
so they could see exactly what was
going on.
It was a heartwarming sight to see
all the children's heads lined up in
the front row as they watched the
proceedings so intently.
After the service the young folks
transferred their activities to the
outdoors for the annual Easter egg
hunt. It didn't seem to take them very
long to get this chore done.
for them a poem entitled All God's
Critters have a Place in the Choir, in
which the message was emphasized
that we are all different, and each
cah contribute in their own way.
The scripture lesson of Job 43: I -
6; Acts 5: 17 - 32; John 20: 19 - 31
was read by Rev. Campbell with
assistance from reader Janna Dodds.
The sermon, What Did I Tell YoU?
talked of information gleaned from
dinner parties, and how- false and
bogus news items can result from
conversations at such events instead
of relying on provable facts. From
our scripture lesson of Luke which
gives the story of Doubting Thomas
who would not believe Christ had
risen from the dead until he saw it,
Rev. Campbell talked about the
values of being skeptical. So while
Thomas was of a logical mind, and
wouldn't accept things on someone
else's say so, such skepticism was
probably healthy in most
circumstances.
Weeks later, when Thomas was
with his friends Jesus appeared
coming through a locked door, and
He knew all about Thomas's
doubtings and had the answers to all
his questions before they were
asked."
Immediately Thomas becomes a
believer", said Rev. Campbell. "He
knew that his Lord lived without
further examination".
Then Rev. Campbell led all in
reciting The Apostle's Creed, and
said that from that Creed people
have life everlasting with God. "We
have faith in a living Saviour, active
in our lives and with us daily," Rev.
Campbell said. "Stories of reported
missiles, aliens, Elvis sightings and
Diana theories must not replace the
living words of God which tell us to
love God with all our heart, and our
neighbour as ourselves".
The collection was taken up by
Bill King, Maurice Douma, Brian
Armstrong and Doug McArter.
Everyone was reminded to get
their tickets for the springtime
supper to be held in the church next
Sunday, April 25. Ham and turkey
will be served.
Bible Study is at Helen Elliott's on
Thursday, April22.
Next Sunday the service will be
conducted by the..Melville Women's
Guild and WMS.
Melville Moments:
by Gerald Gibson
1875 - The Moderator, Dr.
Ferguson, reported that he had
conferred with a member about a
rumour of his being drunk. The
member admitted it but manifested a
spirit of indifference that he had
been guilty of the same on many
occasions before and had been dealt
with privately. The Moderator cited
him to appear before the session.
The Session approved of thiS in
order, if possible, to bring him to a
better state of mind. Results
unknown.
