From left: Terri-Ann, Mark and Gail Tully have opened
Chocolates and Fudge in Brussels. The business, which
offers premium Swiss chocolate made in Toronto and fudge
from an established business in London, has gotten off to a
sweet start, with such positive response that the shelves
were nearly cleared in the first week. (Bonnie Gropp photo)

A NOTE FROM BETTY

importantly the snow has just about

Reviews have been sweet for a
new Brussels business, which
opened its doors April 5.
Mark and Gail Tully, with
assistance from their daughter Terri-
Ann are the owners of Chocolate and
Fudge on Turnberry Street.
"We brought in what I anticipated
would be a month's supply," Mark
said of their first week. "and it was
gone in six days."
The idea for a chocolate store may
have been rooted back to as far as
Mark's youth. "Dad loved Laura
Secord and went there as a boy. We
had always gone into chocolate
shops and when Mom and Dad were
talking about opening a store this
seemed like a fun thing to do,- said
Terri-Ann.
The business purchases its
chocolate from a Swiss. chocolatier
with 25 years of experience, who
now owns two stores in Toronto.
Among the items are 100 gm
chocolate bars of premium Swiss
chocolate. "We put them out and
they're gone." said Mark. "It's
incredible."
left tucked in by trees. The wonders
of April remain in my top 10 list of
good things.
As you start to root about in your
perennial beds think about a
donation to the 5Rs with your extra
plants. Just drop them in a hag or
box and in a recycling manner.
They'll grow again in a new spot
making a whole new set of people
smile.
If you're looking for a good meal
next Sunday evening pop up to the
Presbyterian Church for the
springtime supper. They'll be happy
to feed you on April 25 between 4:30
p.m. and 7 p.m. and you'll be
helping them with the expenses of
running a church.
There are also a number of
speciality items. "He has over 5,000
moulds. There's just about
everything. If there's something
you'd like, chocolate golf balls,
roses, guitar, I'm sure he has it," said
Mark.
The fudge comes from the
Fudgery Shoppe in London. The
couple who makes it are the second
generation to do so, said Mark.
"We've been getting lots and lots
of compliments on it," said Terri-
Ann. "It's a big seller. It moves very
fast."
Her father laughs telling the story
about one businessperson who came
down the street to buy some fudge,
then ran back minutes later. "He
stuck his head in the door to say it
was the best fudge he'd ever had."
The fudge comes in 100 different
varieties, which Mark said they will
bring in to test, then determine
which go over the best.
To continue the satisfaction for
any sweet tooth, the business also
has a lower grade chocolate made by
Gail and Terri-Ann, and suckers.
Tins of assorted nuts arc also
available.
The Tullys will do gift baskets
As the weather warms up the
walkathons and other fundraisers
pop up for our attention. One of the
areas of our health and living system
that needs more support is palliative
care. Death is part of life and so we
need to make a few plans no matter
our age. Volunteers are available to
talk to folks about dying.
As in all aspects of life some folks
do it well but many tend to ignore it.
The palliative care folks started
national walk last year to build
awareness For this non-glamorous
but very important work.
On May 2 you could support Hike
for Hospice for our area by walking
or sponsoring someone. Walkers are
meeting at the picnic shelter in
with one day's notice and will
deliver free in Brussels. They will
also do items for corporate affairs.
which can include a reproduction of
the business logo. "If they're having
a party or wanting something for
customers it s a pretty cool idea."
said Mark.
Orders for weddings are also
welcomed.
• Contact can he made through the
website at
www.chocolatesandfudge.com or by
phoning 887-8875.
Soon coming will be ice-cream
and specialty coffee.
Chocolate and Fudge is open
Wednesday, Thursday and Friday
from 10 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. and
Saturday and Sunday from noon
until 5 p.m. These may change.
however, as the family determines
what works best.
The Tullys have been thrilled thu.
far by the community response. "We
are still getting welcomes and
people stopping by just to tell us
they are enjoying the fudge or
chocolate. It has been wonderful."
said Mark.

As the world becomes more
obsessed about diets we need to
retain our common sense about foOd.
The less processing the better and
get in the habit of checking labels.
Fat, especially trans fat and sugar are
not to be a main food group.
Daily eating needs to be a priority,
for we are what we eat. The food
companies need to hear that we are
serious about having good food
ilavailable that is not filled with
hidden sugar and fat. Money talks so
let your future health determine your
food intake.
Time to dig out the spring cloths -
yippee!
