Ironmen trail. Peach Kings in OHL final
By Jim Brown
'pVinghant Advance Times
The Wingham Ironmen got off to a
rough start in their quest for the
Clarence Schmaltz. Trophy,
emblematic of OHA Junior 'C
hockey supremacy.
The Ironmen were -handed their
worst defeat of the post-season, last
Friday afternoon in Grimsby, when
the Peach Kings romped to a 7-1
decision over Wingham.
That setback set the tone for
Saturday evening's rematch at the
North Huron-Wescast Community
Complex, as the Ironmen came out
crashing and banging, looking to
atone themselves for the defeat in
game one. They still fell 4-1, to trail
two games to none in the best four of
seven OHA Junior C hockey
championship series.
Game three was played
Wednesday in Grimsby, with game
four back in Wingham on Friday
evening. A fifth game, if required.
will go Sunday afternoon in
Grimsby. Games five and six, if
required, will be played April 23 and
25.
"They are a real good team,"
coach, Louie Livingston said
following Saturday's setback at the
complex. "We did play better
tonight (Saturday) than we did
yesterday (Friday)."
He said the Peach Kings are a team
that is constantly putting pressure on
the opposing teams, especially the
defencemen in their own zone.
"They do the' things you're
supposed to do, and they do them
well," he said.
The coach indicated that in Friday
afternoon's contest in Grimsby, a
number of the players had
something they had not planned on
this late in the season.
"Some of the players may have
had butterflies," said Livingston.
"That was something we had not
foreseen."
But, he added, this is the 01-IN
Junior 'C' provincial championship.
The coach believes that the
butterflies were a cause of the first

two goals given up by the Ironmen.
"We also had the jitters. and those
jitters resulted in penalties, which
Grimsby converted into goals." said
Livingston. "The next thing you
know, we were down 4-0."
The coach said that after the bad
start, the lronmen played well in the
second period, getting a number of
scoring chances.
"We fell apart in , the third period."
he stated. "We made
uncharacteristic mistakes."
According to Livingston. the
lronmen demonstrated to
themselves in Saturday's contest
that they could play with the Peach
Kings.
"We were happy to be down 2-1
after two periods." the coach said.
"We had lots of chances ourselves,
but were just unable to finish the
play."
He noted they were able to keep
the Grimsby shots down to a
reasonable number and alSo
minimized their scoring chances.
"They are a team with a lot of
,peed and talent," said Li%ingston.
"We cannot afford to make Mistakes.
We have to play every shift
perfectly."
Even though the Ironmen proved
they could play with the Peach
Kings, the coach said he would like
to get some early goals and get the
lead, to see how Grimsby plays
when they are trailing.
"We would then be able to better
utilize our systems, " he said.
In order to beat the Peach Kings,
Livingston said the Ironmen are
going to have to work hard together
and not take any penalties or make
any mistakes.
"They are a team that capitalizes
on their opportunities when they are
given them," he said. "'They take
advantage of your mistakes."
The coach indicated that the
Ironmen have been in this situation
before -- trailing 2-0 in the series --
and were able to come back to win.

"We just have to play perfect and
with a couple bounces going our
way, we can beat them," said
Livingston.
The Ironmen are still excited about
the support they have been
receiving, both at home and away.
"The players still can't believe
how packed the complex is, even
before the pre-game warm-up," said
the coach.
"The support has just been
tremendous throughout the town.
Businesses have the 'Go Ironmen
Go' signs in their store windows and
the- signs all over the arena, the
feeling is just great. It means a lot to
the players," the coach said.
In Saturday evening's game at the
complex, the Ironmen came out
checking and hitting and kept the
pressure on the Peach Kings for the
opening two minutes. -
The Ironmen took the first penalty
of the game -- a slashing infraction
against Matt MacPhee -- but the
disadvantage did not last long as
Grimsby's Justin Nattress took an
interference penalty with under a
minute remaining in MacPhee's
minor.
At 10:10 of the first period, Mitch
deBoer was helped off the ice by
Cole Stewart and Matt Williams,
with a sore back after being cross-
checked. Although he was out the
rest of the game, it was expected he
would play in Wednesday's game in
Grimsby.
Jason Blinkhorn made a number of
big saves in the period to keep the
Ironmen even with Grimsby. But,
with 7.4 seconds remaining in the
first period, Ryan Toth gave the
Peach Kings a 1-0 lead.
Josh Gal lea made it 2-0 at 14:34 of
period two on the powerplay.
