Melville begins morning with sunrise service
Greeting at Melville Presbyterian
Church on Easter Sunday morning
were Neil and Ruth Schade. The
front of the church was bright and
colourful with candles and a large
assortment of potted tulips arranged
on the communion table. These
flowers were placed there by friends
and families in honour of loved ones
departed.
The service was well attended, as
many people attended the sunrise
service on Maple Street and the
Easter breakfast held by the Sunday
school in the church basement.
With Crystal McLellan at the
organ, Rev. Cathrine Campbell led
the call to worship. then all together
sang triumphantly, Jesus Christ is

news about Easter", said Rev.
Campbell.
She gave each child a bookmark
on which was written New Hope,
New Joy, New Life, to place in a
pew Bible, She also gave them an
Easter lollipop.
The scripture lesson was Isaiah
65: 17-25; Acts 10: 34-43; Luke 24:
I -35, led by Rev. Campbell, with
assistance by reader Elaine
Armstrong.
The sermon, What's New? was •'
about the group of women who went
to the tomb of Jesus. After waiting
below the cross during the painful
period of Jesus' crucifixion they
were sad and downcast, doing the
necessary and getting ready to
resume their ordinary lives without
Jesus in their midst. When they saw
the stone rolled back and talked to
the two men in blinding white robes
who stood beside them, they were
told to remember the words of Jesus.
"We are going to Jerusalem and
everything that has been written is
about to be fulfilled".
When these women were the first
to get this good news that they could
tell others, this raised their status to
that of the disciples, said Rev.
Campbell.
"Even today 2,000 years later, we
are part of that group who hear and
listen and know, and we are to
remember the words of Christ so
that all things become new" said
Rev. Campbell.
"From the empty cross, the empty
tomb, we know that the Son of God
has risen to Eternal Life, and we can
do as well".
The collection was taken up by
Doug McArter, Bill King, Bill
Aitchison, and Frank Schimanski,
while the senior choir sang I Will
Glory in the Cross.
Appreciation was expressed from
the session to Harvey and Betty
Shaw for their ongoing efforts to
keep the church -in good condition
and all their snow removal during
this past winter as well as to Dave
and Janet McCutcheon for their
donation of a DVD/VCR to the
Sunday school in memory of Jack
McCutcheon.
