Ironmen in the game
Solid goaltending keeps
Continued from page 13
The same almost happened last
Wednesday, but had it not been for
the solid goaltending of Blinkhorn
and the goalkeeper's best friend --
the goalposts -- Dresden could have
easily tied up the game in the final
two minutes of period three.
The game marked the first post-
season game for Cole Stewart. In
fact, it was his first game in approx-
imately three months. He had been
scheduled to play last Tuesday in
Dresden, but due to unforeseen cir-
cumstances was unable to, as his
equipment was worn by another
player who had his equipment left in
Wingham.
Coach Livingston used Stewart
sparingly throughout the game, first
as a defenceman and also one shift
as a forward.
"He was an important member of
the team during the regular season,
so it is only right that he gets to play
in the playoffs," the coach said.
"He's been practising with the team
the past few weeks."
According to Livingston, the
Ironmen played their worst first
period of the playoffs last Tuesday
in Dresden.
"We played better the rest of the
game, even coming back in the sec-
ond period to tie the game at three."
He said they fell behind early in
the third period.
"Zack came through with the tying
goal for us," stated Livingston.
"And, with guts and determination,
he scored the winning goal. That's
the way we've been playing all
year."
Last Wednesday's game started
out the same way as the night
before, but it was not as bad as the
teams were tied at one after one peri-
od.
"We came out flat in the first peri-
od again tonight," the coach said
after game three. "There was no
intensity, no emotion."
The team played better in the sec-
ond period.
"We out-played, out-skated, out-
hustled and out-shot them, and
we only get one goal," said
Livingston.
However, he was concerned that
this inability to score goals when
they have the opportunities could
come back to haunt them.
That almost happened last
Wednesday as they took a penalty
late in the third period, with the
Kings coming close to scoring, ring-
ing one shot off the post.
"Tim Zettler scored early in the
third period to give us a two-goal
lead," said the coach.
According to Livingston, every-
one played well, but they are still
relying too much on netminder
Jason Blinkhorn to come up with the
big save to preserve the victory or
keep them close.
"If not for Blinky, I don't know
where we'd be," the coach said. "He
saves a lot of our mistakes. He has
been playing really sound."
After Dresden opened the scoring
last Wednesday, on a Chris McPhail
goal, the Ironmen tied the game at
one about three minutes later, as
Derrick Givens scored from about
15 feet out, a shot that Dresden net-
minder Corey Bell got a piece of,
but could not keep in his glove.
Anderson received the assist.
In the second period, Zettler
scored 10:12 into the period to give
a 2-1 lead to the Irolimen. Anderson
and Matt Williams earned the
assists.
Zettler scored the insurance mark-
er at 2:30 of the third period, with
deBoer and Filsinger getting the
helpers.
O'Krafka tallied two goals last
Tuesday to lift the Ironmen to the
victory. Chris Stanley had a goal and
two assists, with Filsinger and Matt
MacPhee adding one goal apiece.
Givens collected a pair of assists,
with single helpers earned by
Zettler, Jamie Chester, Luke
Williams and Anderson.
Scoring for Dresden were
McPhail, Joe Aitken, Breydan Belan
and John Aitken.
The Ethel euchre was held on
Monday, March 29 with 12 tables in
play.
Winners were: share-the-wealth,
John Subject, Charlie Harrison;
high, Marion Harrison, Walter
Seiler; low, Mary Huether, Mar-
garet Peebles; lone hands, Helen

tally prizes given out.
The next euchre will be held on
Monday, April 12 at 8 p.m.
