It took 30 seasons, but the
Wingham Ironmen are finally
getting a shot at the Clarence
Schmaltz Trophy, emblematic of
OHA Junior C supremacy.
The Ironmen gained a berth in the
final, Sunday afternoon at the North
Huron-Wescast Community
Complex, with a 4-1- decision over
the Dresden Kings to win the semi-
final series in five games.
Dresden opened' the scoring at
6:24 of period one as Josh Johnston
got credit for the marker, which was
not called a goal until referee Dave
Hornsby conferred with goal judge
Jason Barlow after the play had been
whistled down.
Just over two minutes later Nick
Filsinger scored his first of two in
the game to even the score at one.
Devin McGuire and Mitch deBoer
received assists. With 40.8 seconds
remaining in the opening , period,
Filsinger scored again to give the
Ironmen the lead. Joel Riley earned
the assist,: .
Zack 0'-Krafka tallied a second
period power play goal and Matt
MacPhee netted a shorthanded goal,
on his birthday, in the second period
to reach the final score. Chris
Stanley assisted on the power play
marker.
Coach Louie Livingston said
Dresden came out hard at the start of
somewhat -- and were finally able to
get back into the game.
"Blinky (goaltender Jason
Blinkhorn) kept us in the game at the
beginning of period one," said the
coach. "He made a number of big
saves, giving up just the one goal."
He noted that a pair of big goals by
the trio of Tim Zettler-deBoer-
Filsinger got the Ironmen rolling.
"The two goals by Nick Filsinger
were huge goals," stated Livingston.
"They were very opportune goals."
The coach added the power play
marker by O'Krafka and the short-
handed goal by MacPhee were also
big goals.
"Zack did a lot of hard work to get
his goal, and Matt blocked a shot
and ended up with a break away and
scored on his birthday to give
himself a good birthday gift," he
said. :There were two great goals."
According to Livingston, he was
very happy for all 24 players on the
Ironmen roster. Even though only 20
(18 skaters and two. goaltenders)
players are permitted on the
gamesheet, he said those four other
players have been very important
members to the Ironmen team.
They may get into the odd game
and then see limited ice time, but
they have been supportive of the
team and good about their playing
time.

First trip to OHA finals for Wingham
proud of the way the team came
back in the third period to t;e the
game at two.
He indicated the Ironmen took too
many inopportune penalties in the
game, and there were two occasions
the Ironmen had two men sitting out
minor penalties for close to a minute
and a half.
They were able to kill off the first
one, and came close on the second,
but with one player still sitting out a
penalty, the Kings scored at 12:20 of
period two to take a 2-0 advantage.
According to Livingston it is the
nature of the game of hockey for
penalties to be called, but he
questioned some of the infractions
called against the Ironmen.
"Some penalties were difficult to
understand. Especially late in the
third period of p tied game," he said.
"I don't think they were called for.
"But, you can't blame the
referee."
The coach said the team worked
`their butts' off in the third period to
come back and tie the game at two.
"This was a tough game to lose,"
said Livingston following the Friday
evening setback. "After a loss like
this, we usually come back harder
the next game."
Netminder Blinkhorn played his
usual strong game, keeping the
Ironmen within striking range and
keeping them even late in the third

minor penalty.
"The winning goal (at 2:06 of the
10-minute overtime period) was not
his fault," stressed Livingston.
Dresden had numerous
opportunities to put the game out of
reach in both the first and second
periods, but the solid goaltending of
Blinkhorn and some bad passing by
Dresden kept the game close.
Breydan Belan and Bob Brewer had
given Dresden a 2-0 lead after 40
minutes of play.
Derrick Givens got the Ironmen on
the board at 6:36 of period three as
he backhanded a rebound from a
Matt Anderson shot into the net.
Stanley knotted the game at two at
10:32 as he fired a Luke Williams
rebound into the open side of the
net.
GAMES TWO AND THREE
After coming back to score a 5-4
decision over the Dresden Kings in
Dresden last Tuesday evening, the.
Ironmen took a stranglehold on the
series last Wednesday evening at the
complex by virtue of a 3-1 decision.
However, every time the Ironmen
have taken a two-goal lead in the
post-season, it appeared that they
want to let the other team get back
into the game by taking unnecessary
and sometimes foolish penalties.
The same almost happened last
Wednesday, but had it not been for
the solid goaltending of Blinkhorn

anniversary season.
"We really do appreciate the
support we've been getting from the
fans. The people of Wingham have
been great, especially when they've
picked up the team and followed
them in the playoffs.
"Seeing that many people in the
stands really helps the players," said
Livingston.
"There are not too many teams that
can say they're playing hockey in
April."
Children are invited to come and
skate with the Ironmen this evening
(Wednesday, April 7), beginning at
7:30 p.m.
The children can enjoy the free
skating session from 7:30 to 8:30
p.m., with the Ironmen coming out
around 8 p.m., to skate with their
fans, prior to their regular practice
session, beginning at 8:30 p.m.
GAME FOUR
Going into last Friday's game in
Dresden, the Wingham Ironmen
were one game, away from the OHA
Junior C championship series.

first and second periods and again in
the third contributed to the team's 3-
