Tobacco and Smoking Related Diseases Fact Sheet The number of Canadian smokers is decreasing The Canadian Tobacco Use Monitoring Survey confirms that daily smoking rates continue to decrease in Canada from 22 per cent in 2001 to 18 per cent in 2002. Do more men smoke than women? According to the Health Canada Canadian Tobacco Use Monitoring Survey conducted in 2002, overall, men (23%) were more likely than women (20%) to be smokers based on general smoking rates. Among people aged 15-19, this trend is reversed: smoking was higher among young women (23%) than young men (21%). Smoking rates in young people The Canadian Tobacco Use Monitoring Survey reports that in 2002 about 22% of Canadians aged 15-19 smoked. Influenced by family, friends and tobacco marketing into believing that it is a desirable adult behaviour, too many people start smoking. However, smoking rates for youth have begun to decrease in recent years - from 28% in 1999 to 22% in 2002. Lung Cancer Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death for both women and men in Canada. In 2003, an estimated 21,100 Canadians were diagnosed with lung cancer and about 18,800 died from the disease. Tobacco and lung Cancer • Smoking is estimated to be responsible for 30 per cent of all cancer deaths. • Smoking is specifically related to about 85 per cent of lung cancer cases. • Chances of being cured of lung cancer are very low; the five-year survival rate is less than 15 per cent. • Health Canada figures estimate that every year, at least 300 non-smokers die from lung cancer due to exposure to second-hand smoke. • Environmental tobacco smoke is the number one risk factor for lung cancer among non-smokers. • Recent research has found that women who begin smoking within five years of starting to menstruate run a significantly higher risk of developing breast cancer before the age of 50 than women who don't smoke. • A Health Canada study found that long-term, regular exposure to passive smoking was associated with a more than doubling of the risk of breast cancer in pre-menopausal women when compared with women who had never been exposed to second hand smoke. • Several studies and significant medical experience show that those who chew tobacco have an increased risk of cancer of the oral cavity. Snuff increases the risk of cancer of the oral cavity and larynx. Hope for the future • Tobacco use is the single most important preventable cause of death in the world. • Every year, thousands of Canadians successfully quit smoking • Smoking damage is not permanent if the smoker stops soon enough. Normally, after a year of non-smoking, the risk of heart attack is halved: after ten to fifteen years of non-smoking, it's about the same as that of someone who has never smoked.
