THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, APRIL 1, 2004. PAGE 17.
Shows greet at Melville Presbyterian service
Betty and Harvey Shaw were the
greeters at Melville Presbyterian
Church last Sunday. Following the
call to Worship. Rev. Cathrine
Campbell led the congregation in the
responsive reading of Psalm 126.
Then, as this was a special Sunday
when new members would be joining
the church, the commissioning hymn.
I The Lord of Sea and Sky, was sung
with accompaniment by organist
Crystal McLellan.
Joining the church by profession of
faith were Colleen Aitchison,
William King, Kyle Gibson, Shane
Gibson, Jodi McIntosh. Shayna Park,
and Ami Shimanski. They were
received at the front of the church by
Rev. Campbell, clerk of session Mary
Douma, and elders Brian Armstrong
and Gordon Mitchell. After they took
their vows, the congregation joined
them in reciting the Apostle's Creed.
They were congratulated by all the
church elders.
On Thursday. April 1, the Grey
Central school council will be
serving ice cream again. The
"sundae" days are being held once a
month as a fundraiser.
There will be a school council
meeting at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, March
30.
Miss Hill's Grade 112 class has
started a class newspaper and will be
entering it in the paper every week.
In math they have just started
learning about money, mainly coins.
In science they are still working on
energy this week. In social studies,
the Grade is are working on
community helpers and the Grade 2s
are learning about the Arctic.
Mrs. Smith's Grade 2s have
started looking at the number 15.
They were also fingerpainting. In
The scripture lesson Isaiah 43: 14-
21: Philippians 3: 1-14: and John 12:
1-8 was read by Rev. Campbell,
assisted by Mary Douma.
The sermon, Give Your Best, was
introduced by Rev. Campbell, She
told of the various auctions she had
attended and how her special interest
was always to see the table linens and
fine china, which were treasured and
set aside by families to be used on
special occasions that never seemed
to come. She referred to the scripture
lesson where Jesus was at the home
of Lazarus, and while Martha cooked
in the kitchen. Mary washed the feet
of JeSus and anointed them with a
costly and precious perfume, then
wiped them with her hair.
The disciple Judas Iscariot,
objected to her action, pointing out
that had this perfume been sold
instead. it could have helped the poor.
Rev. Campbell said that by this'
action Mary gave the best she had td
science they are learning about air,
water and the environment.
They are seeing a lot of signs of
spring.
Mrs. Taylor's Grade 3s have been
doing cursive writing as well as
subtracting with two-digit numbers.
In art they did St. Patrick's Day
activities.
In math, the Grade 4s have been
working at 3D geometry challenges.
They are getting very good at
designing nets and constructing a
variety of 3D shapes. They are
planning a model town and applying
their geometry skills while
constructing all of the buildings in
the town.
They are learning about colours
and their effect in science. They had
a social studies test on Friday.
Jesus. Then she referred to Queen
Juliana of the Netherlands. who spent
years in Canada during their
occupation of the Second World War.
She became queen in 1948 and ever
since the Netherlands sends 20,000
tulip bulbs annually to bloom on
Parliament Hill in Ottawa in gratitude
for Canada's hospitality.
But when in 1953, the country of
Holland suffered the most destructive
storm ever with flooding and deaths
and much hgrdship, she pitched in to
help her people. The dignity of
Queen Juliana was never to be
symbolized so much by a crown as by
the dirty rubber boots she wore when
she travelled by small boat to her
people throughout the flooded areas
of Holland. Thus she too gave her
best, just like Mary.
"We are all called upon to give our
best. All days are special in the eyes
of God, as we are God's people", said
Rev. Campbell. "so be lavish in
The class surprised Mrs. Burnfield
with a birthday card that they all had
signed on Friday.
This week in Mr. Payne's class,
they answered questions about a
song called, He Thinks He'll Keep
Her, for literature. In art they are
creating 3D structures of the
student's choice, using only hot glue
and one piece of white bristol board.
They are drawing and labelling
animal cells in science and they had
a history test on Wednesday.
This week Mr. Garland's morning
class has been doing fractions. They
have been doing animal projects
where they pick an animal and
research on that animal.
The afternoon class had been
continuing their novel, Cowboy's
Don't Cry by Marilyn Halvorson.

Did You Know...
Melville Momints by Gerald Gibson
1888 - The Reverend John Ross:
A committee was appointed to
confer with the elder Donald
McLaughlin about neglect to attend
Sunday services or session meetings
and see if they could receive a
satisfactory answer from him. This
being done, the elders received no
answer from him. He was then cited

situation of the person who needs to
be so helped, not letting oneself be
swayed by subjective viewpoints,
which are often cowardly and
sentimental.
A spirit of penance keeps us from
becoming too attached to the vast
imaginative blueprints we have
by the session to appear before them
on May 28, 1888 the moderator to
serve the citation in person. The
session having waited for a time,
McLaughlin did not appear and was
cited for the second time to appear on
the following Saturday. During the
second citation McLaughlin did not
appear and the Session decided to
take action.
After due deliberation they
unanimously reached the following:
That we find Donald McLaughlin
(elder) guilty of the cl)arge of neglect
of duties as a member of the session
and guilty of contumacious
behaviour and do hereby suspend
him from ever taking the eldership or
any part thereof until he shall have
notified the session of his desire to be
restored and his determination to
perform the duties of his office.

we have already foreseen our master

joy we give to God when we are
happy to lay aside our third-rate
painting efforts and let him put in
the features and colours of his
choice!
