Agriculture Brussels Livestock report Fed steers, heifers sell $2 lower at sale Total receipts for Brussels Livestock for the week ending March 26. were 2,403 head of cattle. 1.247 lambs and goats. On Tuesday the fed steers and heifers sold at prices $2 lower. Fancy and double muscle steers and heifers sold $90 to $94.75; Choice steers and heifers, $80 to $85; Second-cut steers and heifers; $75 to $80. The cows traded at prices $5 to $7 higher. On Thursday the veal sold on a steady market. New crop lambs sold sharply higher at $160 to $227. Heavier lambs sold on a higher mar- ket also. On Friday the calves traded on a steady market while the year- lings sold under pressure. There were 494 steers on offer. Phares Kraemer, Paisley, consigned one blonde steer weighing 1,435 lbs. which sold to Holly Park Meat Packers for $92.50. His overall offering of sixteen steers averaged 1.505 lbs. selling for an average price of $79.08. Eight black steers consigned by Robert Mitchell, Listowel, averaged 1,364 lbs. selling for an average price of $82.94 with sales up to $92. Pete Dewys, Varna, consigned two gold steers averaging 1.238 lbs. which sold to Dominion Meat Packers for $87. His overall offering .of three steers averaged 1,278 lbs. selling for an average price of $84.79. Seven steers consigned by Murray Johnston, Bluevale, averaged 1,389 lbs. selling for an average price of $83.05 with his top grey steer weighing 1,405 lbs. selling to Holly Park Meat Packers for $87. Moore The Douglas Bull Evaluation Centre, the largest bull evaluation centre in the province, held its sec- ond annual Select Bull Sale on Saturday. A large crowd was on hand, despite the cold and snowy condi- tions from as far as South Western Ontario and Quebec. Attendees were welcomed to the sale by BIO's Breeding and Marketing Consultant, Brian Pogue. Preston Cull Auctioneering Services handled the sale. Sixteen hulls sold for an average price of $2,184 per bull. The high-selling hull and Cattlemen's Choice Champion was Tag 4135, a 13/16 Black Angus bull consigned by A+ Associates. Shawn and Cinzia Piggott of Brigden paid $6,000 for the Black Composite bull. Slice of Huron will be presented once again this year to Grades 3 and .4 students in Huron and Perth S'ounties. The event provides students with an opportunity to learn about various aspects of agriculture first hand. Featured sections this year include clairy,.,beef, swine, field crops, poul- try, farm safety and water quality. Students participate in hands-on activities, see live animals and have an opportunity to ask questions of farmers and other resource people who arc staffing the activities. Ivan Dane. The second high selling hull was the Reserve Cattlemen's Choice Champion, tag 4165, consigned by Craig Oattes of Charco Charolais. Stephen Discher of Pembroke paid $3,300 for the polled Charolais bull that ranked in the top 9 per cent of all bulls for the Beef Builder Index with excellent growth ABCs, an end of test weight of 1440 and a 39 cm. scrotal circumference. Tag 4175, consigned by Brian & Brett Coughlin of Cornerview Charolais was •the third Cattlemen's Choice selection; a polled Charolais bull purchased by Myles Hartwig of Killaloe for $2,350. Kevin Baker of Madoc purchased the third highest selling bull (tag 4170), a polled Charolais consigned by Land O'Lakes, for $2,700. Also taking place on Saturday were various bull and heifer evalua- tion centre open houses. Paul McCallum of the McCallum Brothers bull evaluation centre was also pleased with the private treaty sale they hosted this past Saturday. It was the biggest crowd ever at the McCallum Brothers, and many bulls were sold at prices ranging from $3,000 - $8,000. . Jack McCoubrey, BIO's beef pro- duction consultant was pleased with the turnout of .the sale, "Producers were watching this one. This is basi- cally the start of the bull sales post- BSE; and yes times are tough, but it's so important to purchase quality genetics.
