From the Minister's Study Time to reflect on Good News By Rev. Joan Golden Brussels United Church In this Season of Lent, within our Christian churches we have been preparing to follow the journey of Christ to the Cross. Lent is a time to remember and reflect on Holy Week and Good Friday. In our various denominations. there are diverse rituals, practices and reflections to mark this time in our Christian calendars. It is a time to reflect on- the life and the teachings of Christ, in this community of Brussels we gather for noontime meditations to prepare for Good Friday, Easter Saturday and the celebration of Easter. It is very important to remember all three days. Without Good Friday, what would the celebration of Easter mean? If we were to skip from the.Hallelujahs of Jesus's entry into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday to the Easter Sunday celebration of trumpets announcing "Jesus Christ is Risen Today!" without reflecting on Good Friday, the message of Christ would not be known. On the other hand, if we only reflected on Good Friday and missed the celebration of Easter, we would also miss the "Good News" of Christ. Easter Saturday is a traditional time of vigil, a time to reflect and pray. How can the messages of Good Friday and Easter be known if we do not take time to reflect and ponder them in our hearts? ' The traditional Bible readings for Lent begin with "Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness." (Luke 4:1). The image of wilderness that may come to our minds may not appear as very inviting. A rather desolate place with extreme temperatures, plant life, if . any, being perhaps thorns - not a place to be com- forted. The Greek word of wilderness used in this passage is eremos, meaning uninhabited, a place without human habitation. If we use that translation it diverts the emphasis from the terrain of the landscape to the fact that wilderness is more about a quiet and solitary place to be. Jesus regularly went to uninhabited places during his ministry. He invited his followers to do the same. One such invitation is found in (Mark 6:30-31) He said to them, "Come away to a deserted place all by yourselves-and rest for a while". For many were coming and going, and they had no leisure even to eat." The Bible has many examples of rest time being provided for. In the beginning, the story of creation, God gave a Sabbath, a time to rest for creation. In fact, until the Sabbath, creation was unfinished. God was still present in this time of rest and trusted creation to function. Only after the Sabbath was the circle of creation made full and complete. In the story of Jonah, God provided a Sabbath time for him, away from the world in the belly of the whale. Jesus chose to take time away in a garden to pray before being arrested, tried and crucified. Easter Saturday was a time-that Jesus "rested" in the grave. . Christians celebrate Sabbath at the beginning of the week to commemorate the resurrection of Christ. We remember the women, who, on the first day of week went to the grave of Christ and were told that Christ was not held by the grave. Resurrection was the • "Good News". Easter Saturday provides for us a time to reflea. The love God had for the world in "being with us" in Christ. The love that Christ taught and modelled in His life. The grace that God offers to us in resurrection and the hope and promise of eternal life. May we ponder this love in our hearts through all seasons. c,00,ANDeh^ ° Chlirch of 004, "The Church is not a Building, It is People Touching People" Sunday 9:15 a.m. - Prayer Meeting 9:45 a.m. - Sunday School 11:00 a.m. - Worship Service Thursday, April 8 7:30 pm - Footwashing and Communion Service Phone 523-4875 308 Blyth Rd.
