Sports Wingham hosts Colt and Trophy championship By Elyse DeBruyn Citizen staff Every year talented curlers across Ontario participate in the annual provincial championship and this year the talent is close to home as the Wingham Golf and Curling Club hosts the event. The four-day Tim Horton's Colt and Trophy Provincial Curling Championships started March 24 and will run until the finals on Saturday. Niel Edgar, fundraising chairman of the event, said the terms Colts and Trophy mean men and women, who compete against each other to become the provincial curling champions. He said the curlers had to win regional championships for their specific area before competing in the championships in Wingham. This is the first sear Wingham has held the championships and Edgar said the nice curling ice at the facility is why it was chosen. Unfortunately, there weren't enough rooms at local motels, so Edgar said the curlers are staying at Pike Lake Golf and Country Club Resort near Clifford, while the travelling spectators have accommodation in Wingham. - Edgar said the Ontario Curling Association pays for motel fees, but the Wingham Golf and Curling Club has raised $7,000 through local sponsors, to pay for programs and the costs of running the facility during then event. He said after expenses are paid, he hopes to have about $5,000 left in proceeds that will go towards the Wingham Golf and Curling Club. There are 80 area volunteers that will help park cars, prepare food, sell tokens and provide transportation for the curlers. Edgar also said tours will be available for the out-of-town guests who are interest in seeing some area scenery. "If they want to see a farmhouse or just check out the area, we provide them with anything they want or need," said Edger. Colt teams are travelling from London, Forest, Stroud, Ottawa, Ayr. Oakville, Quinete and Dixie, while Trophy curlers are travelling from West Ottawa, Alexandria, Burlington, Galt, St. George, Peterboroght, I lderton and Kitchener/Waterloo. Edgar said the club is encouraging local residents to come out and watch because "it will be really exciting," and there isn't any admission fee. Before every scheduled game, curlers get half-an-hour of warm-up time. The Colts play at 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, then at noon on Saturday with the finals at 7:30 p.m. The Trophies play at noon and 7:30 p.m. on Thursday then noon again on Friday. They begin at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday and finals start at 4 p.m. The banquet for Colts and Trophies will be held on Saturday beginning at 7 p.m. Brussels Club hosts St. Patrick's jitney Woman reports ince, d ent Closing in With a Brussels player close on her blades, a member of the Thedford Bantam Girls works the puck up the ice, with a teammate covering, during the Sunday afternoon game in Brussels.
