He said even though the topic of succession planning is difficult to approach as a family, everyone should realize that the sooner you start, the easier the process and that options may be lost if left too long. "It is important to build flexibility into your planning and to periodically review and revise," he said. He suggested to also assemble a By Bonnie Gropp Citizen editor There's a huge irony to the crisis in the beef industry. With borders closed to the export of most of the Canadian beef market, the standards for top quality have probably never been higher. Part of this is the Source Qualified Ontario Calf (SQOC) program. Dave Wheeler, a certified SQOC feedlot owner from the Brussels area, feels it's a good thing for the industry. "I'm not saying it's perfect but it's the best program thus far" SQOC was initiated by BIO and the Ontario Cattleman's Assocation last fall. The brand label calves are marked with an orange ear tag that team of advisors in the areas of accounting, law, banking, insurance investments and possibly family counseling. "These should be people you trust and are comfortable with. Feel free to ask them about their qualifications and what experience they bring to the table," he said. "Then from that group, you will probably select a quarterback who will manage communications and generally bring things all together. This person can be very valuable to the process," said Brinkman. He concluded with the long term goal, to transfer a viable business in such a way that when the parents are gone, the family will still get guarantees several facts. The animals will be age and source verified, their genetics will be known. There will also be process verification such as the usual castration and dehorning and the more unique total cow herd vaccination for BVD. "Anytime you see a tag with SQOC, there will be things you should know about that calf," said Beef Improvement Ontario's (B10) Brian Pogue. One of these is the age verification. Currently because of the BSE situation the U.S. border has been open only to boxed beef from animals that are less than 30 months old. Rather than using dentition to determine age, which together for Christmas dinner. "Proper planning can make it happen," said Brinkman. has been the best way to date, but not always accurate, SQOC animals can now be traced back to birth. "initially when we were looking at SQOC, we thought the program would be of some value down the road. Obviously with the state of the industry, age has become a much bigger issue, said Pogue. • Wheeler, whose operation is called WBX Cattle, learned about SQOC two years ago from Jack McCoubrey Continued on A-15 Process easier with early start Engineering: Agricultural & Commercial (Independently done with wide safety factors) Custom Features - Side Entrances, Awnings above side curtains, open sides, ridge vents, customized widths, wagon covers, etc. Frames: Powder coated for maximum protection plus colour options - or black steel. • No joint taping needed • 12 gauge steel (heaviest in industry) • Fully cross braced - bolted in • Deep Trusses - web height up to 42 in.
