and began milking sheep one year later. They also sell meat

lamb and if it's not their own, boot it
away. So it takes time for them to get
used to someone else milking."
A sense of humour wasn't all that
was needed that first year. Making
such a big change in one's life
can be daunting. "There were a lot
of sleepless nights when we star-
ted."
Two and a half years later,
however, Rob has relaxed a bit. The
Cardiffs now employ five part-time
people in busy seasons. Having
quickly expanded the flock when
they started, Rob says it's now
time to really concentrate their
energies on production, keeping the
size of the flock between 1,000 and
1,100.
As well Rob sees a potential for
expanding the industry in the future.
"It's a specialty market. It's
incredible how it depends on so
many variables."
"There have been sacrifices you
have to make. I miss that annual
fishing trip now, but I still get to go
out and play hockey with the old
Crusaders. And I see my family now
more than I did as an electrician in
London."
