Man marks 40th year with Gay Lea co-op
MARTIN RAAN
40 years on Gay Lea board
By Elyse DeBruyn
Citizen staff
After surviving over 40 years of
good, bad, exciting and rewarding
times with Gay Lea Foods, a local
90-year-old man is still very much a
respected member in the company.

heat for the winter. People who live
in town, but like the environmental
aspects of the fuel, should try and
strike a deal with a farmer, he
suggests.
"You will get the cleanest corn
from a farmer."
Maintenance for the stoves- is
minimal, said Gulutzen. "Once a
month you shut it down to clean it,"
a process that takes about half an
hour. "Use a shop vac, blow all the
dust outside and you're up and
running again."
Generally the stoves need to be
filled just once a day. The hopper in

Ltd, Martin Baan of Walton, was a
farmer from out west who decided to
move to the area with his wife
Catherine in 1951.
Currently, 20 per cent of the
province's milk producers are
among Gay Lea's members,
shareholders-owners.
Guelph Creamery is still home to
Gay Lea butter production today. It
was one of the original six United
Co-operative of Ontario branches
which consolidated to form United
Dairy and Poultry Co-operative
Limited in 1958.
Baan and his wife, both natives of
Holland, were married in 1939 and
shortly after. the Second World War
ended, they moved from
Saskatchewan and bought the farm
in Walton, where they still happily
live.
The couple has.one daughter, who
lives with her husband near Sudbury
and three sons, one of whom was on
a two-year mission in Africa before
getting involved with Erb Transport.
The other two sons farm just down
the road from their father.
While in Saskatchewan, Baan
raised dairy cows and some hogs as
well as growing grain.
He said when they moved to
Walton, he kept his mixed farm of
dairy, grain and hogs while
pounds while the bigger one holds
70.
If there's a downside, Gulutzen
blames it on capricious Mother
Nature. "Sure it can be a bit of a
roller coaster. If you have a drought
corn prices are going to go up and
this is not as economical. But when
you do have a bumper year, there's
more savings."
Grain Stoves Inc. currently has
dealers in Ontario, Quebec,
Manitoba, and Alberta, as well as in
some areas of the United States.

involving himself with a cheese
plant in Blyth.
Aside from dairy farming, Baan is
very involved in the Christian
Church and was in the Gideon
Organization (a Bible distribution)
as well.
In 1966, United Dairy and Poultry
Co-operative membership was
divided into five zones, each of
which elected a plant committee and
a representative to the board of
directors. The plant committees were
replaced, in the mid-1960s, by a
delegate-based system and three-
year revolving electoral periods
whereby three zones were
represented by a total of 60 delegates
elected at annual zone meetings.
After a few years of working with
Gay Lea, Baan became involved
with the Toronto board in the 1960s.
Then in 1973 he was named
president of the board and cut the
ribbon for the grand opening of the
Gay Lea plant in Toronto.
In total, Baan spent six years as a
board member, travelling to
meetings in Wingham, Blyth and
Toronto. At times, the meetings
lasted anywhere from a few hours to
a couple of days.
He said the best part of the
meetings were the wonderful people
he was fortunate enough to meet, but
with the good came the bad because
he was away from his family for
days at a time.
The meetings he attended involved
many discussions of manufacturing
and marketing as well as discussing
the profit of investment for Gay Lea
products. They reviewed the
strengths and weaknesses of the
products and decided if any changes
were needed.
He said Gay Lea Foods Co-
operative Ltd. is based on people not
on individual power.
He said the co-operative part of
Gay Lea is not to eliminate others,
but to be part of the competition.
Did you know?
The most common
circumstances surrounding
deaths among children 15 and
younger were "blind"
runovers where the bystander
was not in view of the
machine operator, and extra-
rider runovers where the
victim fell from a machine
and , was then run over.
Among adults, rollovers of all
types were most common. —

runovers and rollovers please
