Student council
hosts spirit days EFFIE McCALL
Mrs. Effie McCall of Clinton and
formerly of Blyth passed away
peacefully at Restview Home,
Clinton on Wednesday, March 10,
2004. She was in her 84th year.
She was the beloved wife of the
late Jim MlCal1, who predeceased
her in 1993. She was the loving
mother of Susan and Bert Buffinga
of RR1, Blyth and cherished
grandmother of Darwin, Sabrina and
Duane Buffinga. She was the dear
sister-in-law of Eileen Nelson and
Beulah Nelson, both of New
Brunswick, Irene McCall of Clinton,
Betty McCall of Brussels and Clara
Perrie of Cranbrook.
Mrs. McCall was predeceased by
her son David McCall in 1998,
infant daughter Charlotte Ann in
1949, five sisters and three brothers.
Friends were received at the Blyth
Visitation Centre of the Falconer
Funeral Homes, 407 Queen St.,
Blyth on Friday from 2 - 4 and 7 - 9
p.m. Funeral service was held at the
Blyth United Church on Saturday,
March 13 at 2 p.m. Rev. Dr. Eugen
Bannerman and Rev. Cecil Wittich
officiated. Pallbearers were Bill
Young, Frank Vansteelandt, John
Perrie, Andrew Perrie, Darwin and
Duane Buffinga.
Interment will be at Blyth Union
Cemetery.
As expressions of sympathy
memorial donations to the Canadian
Cancer Society or to the charity of
one's choice would be appreciated.
LOIS SCHNEIDER
Lois Elizabeth (Webster) (Hart)
Schneider of Brussels passed away
at Listowel Memorial Hospital on
Friday, March 12, 2004. Born in
Clinton on May 12, 1937, Lois was
in her 67th year.
She was the beloved wife of
Mervyn Schneider and the late
James Hart. She was the dear
stepdaughter of Lila Webster of
Clinton. Mrs. Schneider was the
loving mother of Joan Hart of
Rostock, Dave Hart and his wife
Susan of Clinton, Jerry Hart and his
wife Barb of Thedford, Cathy
Thompson and her husband Dan of
Grand Bend and Bev Kordi and her
husband Seif of Langley, B.C. She
was the loved sister of Joyce
Scotchmer, Robert Webster and his
wife June, all of Bayfield and Karen
Harman and Eugene Holtby of St.
Thomas and dear mother-in-law of
John Elston and his fiancée Ronnine
Hallam of Arva.
Mrs. Schneider was also loved by
her 16 grandchildren and her many
family and friends.
She was predeceased by her'
parents Melvin and Cassie Webster,
daughter Donna Elston, and brother-
in-law Ken Scotchmer.
Friends were received by the
family from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.
Sunday at the Schimanski Family
Funeral Home, 401 Albert St.,
Brussels, where the funeral service
was conducted on Monday, March
15 at 2 p.m. with Rev. Cathrine
Campbell of Melville Presbyterian
Church officiating.
Interment will be in Baird's
Cemetery, Stanley Twp.
Carrying floral tributes were
grandchildren Jason Armstrong,
Kristen Elston, Darren Hart, Nicole
Thompson, and Sarah Hart.
Pallbearers were- Eugene Holtby,
Dan Thompson, John Elston, Eric
Prescott, Neil Gowing and Stewart
Steiss.
As an expression of sympathy
memorial donations may be made to
the Canadian Liver Foundation, the
Canadian Diabetes Association or to
the charity of one's choice.
LORRAINE EDWARDS
Margaret Lorraine (Anderson)
Edwards of Brussels, passed away
peacefully at Seaforth Community
Hospital, on Sunday, March 7, 2004.
Born in Woodstock on Apri1.19,
1937, Lorraine was in her 67th year.
She was the beloved wife of
Murray Edwards. She was the dear
mother of Gord Edwards and his
wife Gail of Blyth, Brenda Edwards
of Woodstock and Doug Edwards of
Palmerston. Mrs. Edwards was the
loved sister of George Anderson and
his wife Bonnie of Woodstock and
Terry Anderson and his wife Nancy
of Bragg Creek, Alberta. She was a
loving grandmother to Courtney,
Brigette, Veronica, Tassi, Jacquelyn,
Christopher and Candice.
Mrs. Edwards was predeceased by
her daughter-in-law Jennifer.
Cremation has taken place.
Friends were received by the
family and a Rebekah service was
held Tuesday at the Schimanski
Family Funeral Home, Brussels. A
celebration of the life of Lorraine
was held Wednesday, March 10 at 2
p.m. from Brussels United Church
with Rev. Sharon Lohnes officiating.
Special remembrances of Lorraine
were given by her grandchildren
Veronica and Chris.
Afterwards the family joined with
friends for a reception and
fellowship.
As an expression of sympathy,
memorial donations were made to
the Seaforth Community Hospital or
to the charity of one's choice.
Brussels Public School's girls' and
boys' basketball teams participated
in the North Huron Tournament at F.
E. Madill. The team members had
lots of fun while meeting people
from different schools.
The student council has been
hosting some spirit days such as Red,
White, and Pink Day, as well as
Pyjama Day. In March, the students
will be encouraged to dress up like
the opposite gender.
The school council also had an ice-
cream sundae party where all of the
students who had worked hard and
got 90 per cent or better in spelling
got to enjoy this treat.
Magazine sales are happening this
month. If you have renewals coming
up, consider doing it through the
school. The teachers have
volunteered to have something done
to them for every $1,000 raised.
Parents and students hosted a staff
appreciation day.
In the kindergarten room they are
busy learning about the letter I. The
senior kindergartens are being
challenged in the spelling bee
contest. The school is sorry to see
Mrs. Crocker leave. She was an
excellent help with the
kindergartens. They welcome Mrs.
Shropshall.
In Mrs. Douma's classroom, the
students are busy with problem
solving, adding and subtracting.
They have the literacy program
taking place right now. They look
forward to the spelling bee contest
every week.
Mr. Stewart and Mrs. Lee have
their class busy with communities,
adding and subtracting and learning
their timetables. Their class had the
highest average in the spelling bee so
they go to to enjoy the ice-cream
party. Reading is also ongoing with
them.
Ms Ewener and the Grade 3/4s are
learning about time, money,
multiplication, temperature and
Native Canadians. They received
second in the spelling bee contest.
Miss Laurie and the Grade 5/6
students have been doing spelling,
weather, geometry and basketball.
They are also learning about Egypt.
They haiie been enjoying rocking in
music class.
Mrs. Baan and Grade 6/7s have
been studying A Midsummer Night's
Dream. It is by William
Shakespeare.
They are working on novel studies
that all relate to Shakespeare and his
life and his plays. They also
just finished patterning and
algebra.
Mr. Weber and the Grade 7/8s are
doing surveys in math, then
calculating the data.
They are doing a lot of work with
pulleys in science and just started a
new program called Crossroads in
language. They are working on
finishing up the literature
circles.
In history, they are learning about
the first people of western
Canada.
They just finished up with
basketball in gym and are moving on
to a unit on dance.
